Today my wife's best friend's husband from high school was killed while jogging by a hit and run (probably drunk) driver.  See the link for the story.  My wife told me that she doesn't want me to run anymore.  As sad as it is, I will still continue to run.  I think there's more of a chance of getting killed in a car by a drunk driver than by running.  Be careful out there people.

Sad, hate to hear that since it could happen to any of us too. Why do you say it was a drunk driver though? Regardless, I agree it is probably better to run and be healthy than to lock yourself indoors and get a heart attack later. My condolences to y'all.

Because Buddy was running with traffic. The truck crossed over and ran him over from behind.

So sorry, Burt. I hope your wife can feel better about your running. I hate it so much when Eric goes out for bike rides because of all the stories about people getting hit by cars when they're riding their bikes. Even though I know that it's not always a rational fear.

From Burt on Fri, Jun 22, 2012 at 17:23:35 from 72.223.80.161

Out of the three - running, biking, driving - biking scares me the most. That's why I try to avoid riding on the road without a helmet.

From DaleG on Fri, Jun 22, 2012 at 17:36:59 from 152.216.3.5

That's really sad, Burt. I'm with you, biking scares me the most, too.

From Brent on Fri, Jun 22, 2012 at 18:47:42 from 66.7.127.67

Burt, no doubt, sad day, we need more trails without stinking cars, what is it going to take? Biking is scary riding with traffic, witnessed a deadly accident in Hawaii a few years ago, car hitting a biker from behind.

I don't have an answer, I hope they catch the person and put him/her away for life.

From flatlander on Sat, Jun 23, 2012 at 07:49:07 from 76.31.26.153

What's really scary is that it might have been intentional. I have had some vehicles intentionally veer my way, kind of a chicken game or something. No defense when you are running against the traffic and somebody crosses over. I love Texas but there are some wackos here, most of them drive old pickups too.

From Hamdog Alum on Sat, Jun 23, 2012 at 15:59:12 from 66.188.108.30

Sad news. I've had one close call from behind. A car passed another and came over to the other side, the only thing that saved me was seeing the headlights. I moved out just in time. I could actually feel the car brush my jacket.

From RAD on Sat, Jun 23, 2012 at 18:55:56 from 98.202.23.178

You want to know what is SO crazy about this? Well, first off let me say that this sickens me...just sickens me. My prayers and love go out to the family and friends! So, the crazy part? My neighbor Allen Robbins was Buddy Hopkins best friend in HS! So, we just found a crazy 'small world' connection. Weird.

Sorry, I really don't mean to distract from the seriousness of the situation, but I couldn't believe it when it was the same story I'd heard about from Allen!

Please, let us all be safe out there.

Dale - swimming in a shark pool scares me the most.

Brent - that must have been horrible to witness that. And your're right, the guy's a total scuzzball for trying to cover it up.

flat - There are a lot of wackos in Texas. I've seen the movies.

Erik - I've had some close calls, but nothing that close. Glad you reacted in time.

RAD - My wife's best friend in high school. Your neighbor's best friend in high school. That is crazy! It's like I just met you. So here's my number.

Thank you for the welcome, and very sorry to hear about your/your wife's friend.

From Dan on Sun, Jun 24, 2012 at 19:44:33 from 24.209.83.20

Wow. Thanks for sharing, sorry to hear it though. I know I have almost been hit a few times on the road, usually due to lack to a turn signal. I have been trail running more and maybe thats a good thing.

From Rob Murphy on Sun, Jun 24, 2012 at 19:50:39 from 24.10.249.165

Sorry about your friend Burt.

One hard and fast rule I live by is always run facing traffic unless you have eyes in the back of your head. It's important to see what might hit you!

From Burt on Sun, Jun 24, 2012 at 19:57:52 from 174.235.130.2

Amelia - you're welcome. I think you'll make lots of friends on the blog.

Dan - i never trust turn signals, on or off.

Murph - absolutely, not much you can do when you get plowed over from behind, though. Gotta keep your head up, too.

From Tracy on Mon, Jun 25, 2012 at 19:07:21 from 50.103.235.9

Oh wow. My condolences.

From Burt on Tue, Jun 26, 2012 at 01:35:34 from 174.235.196.181

Thanks Tracy. You're always do kind to me.

From Burt on Sun, Jul 01, 2012 at 09:34:11 from 72.223.80.161

Yesterday was Buddy's funeral. And the guy that killed him hung himself.
