See here for the race report on legs 3 and 15.

...I don't know all the details, but I what I do know is that a participant was struck by a vehicle while trying to cross the Carefree Highway to support his teammate.  I hear he's in critical condition.  The race officials stopped the race and had everyone collect their runners and meet at Exchange 24.  From here, the race started again.  Teresa had about a half mile to go when they picked her up.  Michael didn't get to run his second leg.  I assumed they wouldn't be handing out awards, but they did ask us where and when we stopped running.  I gather they're trying to figure something out as for team placing.

Like I said in the previous entry, we were ahead of most of the 350 teams until then.  Now we had to start running again 1 hour and 40 minutes behind schedule.  At least there were a lot more teams to see now, and we could play the passing game again.  I was still worried about how sore I was.  I had massaged my foot real good at Teresa and Seb's house.  Then I put Icy Hot on my legs.  Thankfully everyone in the van loved the smell of Icy Hot.  My legs did start to loosen up a little.  But would my foot hold out?

I projected a 7:52 pace because I had an 887 foot descent with hardly any ascent.  I figured I'd get passed by the customary 2 teams again, but was only passed by the Cobra Kai.  They showed me no mercy.  I'm just glad they didn't sweep my leg and send me home in a body bag.  I got three kills myself even.  My first mile was 7:46.  Although it was nice that I ran faster than what I wanted, it was hard because the stomach cramps were back.  The next mile was worse at 7:57.  Then I started feeling better.  I'm not sure when the cramps stopped, but I found myself moving pretty good.  The third mile was 7:49.  Next was a 7:53.  Now I was thinking to myself that I only had a 5k to go.  I ran the fifth mile in 7:41.  The sixth mile was 7:56, and I was getting worn out.  Then I realized that I had just run 21.5 miles.  I only had 1.1 miles to go.  I pushed it a little faster and ran a 7:34.  My Garmin measured the route a little short, so the last 0.01 miles was a 5:50 pace.  I had got outkicked by a guy that I had just passed.  I'm not sure where he pulled that kick out of, but it must have come from some smelly orifice.  My average pace on that last leg was 7:48.

Anyway, I was done and actually felt good; no stress fracture.  Everyone in the van was so fun.  Eddie wore his turtle costume the whole time.  People loved it.  We went to Andy's house after our third legs to shower and freshen up.  It was nice of his wife to allow us in and let us raid their cupboards.

Another fun thing was seeing so many people I knew.  I saw Dan, Margene, and Jacob from Athlinks.com.  I saw Ran, Chris, and Dion from my hometown of Kingman.  I saw Br. and Sis. Teuller, Br. Lorsch, and Br. Causey from previous wards I've been in.  I saw Drew from last year's team.  I saw Jennifer, Emma, and Todd from my team two years ago.  I'm not even that popular!

After almost 32 hours, Rio's Ruthless Runners finally crossed the finish line in the Tempe Marketplace.  Tired and stinky, we were elated to be done.

We said our goodbyes and wondered if we'd ever see each other again.  It was all together happy and sad and every other emotion in between.  I can't wait until next year, but I call the easy legs!

Good job, captain. Sorry to hear about the runner, hope he makes it with no permanent damage. Glad you had a lot of fun.

Just remember next time that the crane kick always works against Cobra Kai.

Oh I love ragnar!!! These posts bring back so many memories. Hey wait a sec wasn't I supposed to be on your team???

From auntieem on Mon, Mar 01, 2010 at 11:06:10 from 67.182.146.94

Great adventure! Congratulations on your great pace, great finish, and all those miles! Those relays sound like a lot of fun. I'm glad you survived injury free, and you totally deserve to call the easy legs next time.

Hope that injured runner is OK.

From SlowJoe on Mon, Mar 01, 2010 at 11:06:18 from 131.59.200.82

Great running and great report, sounds like quite an adventure.

From RAD on Mon, Mar 01, 2010 at 14:21:46 from 67.172.229.125

LOVED reading the report, and what a kick to stop the two entries where you did! I'm glad I didn't come in before the 2nd was finished! :)

Sounds like a great Ragnar - they are a sleepover with running mixed in, but it's the BEST kind!

I'm glad there were no SF to speak of and that you're back and feeling ready to go! Great splits on all your legs and it seems like you got a nice chunk of road-kill in there (no pun toward the actual accident!!).

From Toby on Mon, Mar 01, 2010 at 15:31:01 from 216.194.124.36

Nicely done Burt! So sad to read about the runner who got hit - that doesn't make running fun!

From JD on Mon, Mar 01, 2010 at 15:55:52 from 70.96.78.157

Great running Burt. Don't know how that guy out kicked you with the pace you had going. There's only so many places to pull out a kick like that.

From rAtTLeTrAp on Mon, Mar 01, 2010 at 17:33:18 from 75.231.228.13

Great report Burt! I love reading about these relays. I really need to find a team to join this year so I can do the NorthWest Passage ragnar.

From Burt on Mon, Mar 01, 2010 at 18:53:25 from 206.19.214.144

Mark - Thanks. These races are my favorites.

Mike - I had Mr. Miyagi rub his hands together and put them on my foot before the run.

Sam - We got lucky with mostly overcast and no rain for the entire race. It was terrific.

Vinh - Thanks. You should do it. There's a handful to choose from on the east coast now.

Brent - let's not forget the dead javelina I didn't mention.

Merri - yeah, what happened? You didn't show.

auntieem - I hear his condition has been upgraded from critical to serious. Still sounds pretty bad.

Joe - I think they still have one in Texas. It should be close to you since Texas is such a small state.

Rachel - I know what you mean. It was hard to write the report and be sensitive to the accident.

Toby - the best place for updates is the Ragnar Relay Series on Facebook.

JD - I recognized the guy from Athlinks, so I started talking to him when I passed him. Maybe I rubbed him the wrong way and he decided he had to beat me.

Mike - You and auntieem could start your own team...

From Nan Kennard on Mon, Mar 01, 2010 at 21:47:21 from 174.51.250.151

Sounds awesome! Glad you had a fun time.

From Teena Marie on Mon, Mar 01, 2010 at 22:56:26 from 174.52.45.85

Any recent news about the hit runner? So sad.

Congrats to your team and love the pic. :)

From seeaprilrun on Mon, Mar 01, 2010 at 23:30:09 from 205.172.12.229

Awesome job to you and the team! You are looking awfully slender in the pic.

From missy on Tue, Mar 02, 2010 at 00:24:02 from 67.40.115.3

Your race makes me feel tired, reading it...riding around in a van would put me to sleep! How can I run after sitting in a van all day..Would need someone to slap me awake! Good job Burty!

From Burt on Tue, Mar 02, 2010 at 09:01:58 from 98.177.220.145

Nan - They should make a Ragnar course in Colorado. At least you guys have a decent basketball team, who lost to the Suns last night, by the way...

Teena - I haven't heard any new news on him. I'll check later.

April - I like that word. Slender. Maybe it was the no sugar for a month. Maybe it wwas photoshop?

Missy - normally I don't hit girls, but I may make an exception with you. lol!

From Kelli on Tue, Mar 02, 2010 at 09:34:58 from 71.219.89.82

Great job Burt!!! Those races are so fun and the AZ one is by far my favorite. I am really impressed with your last run, it is so hard at the end with no sleep, I crash and burn every time.

We got an e-mail about the guy getting hit. They want us to wear reflective gear at night whether we are running or not, probably a good idea.

From missy on Tue, Mar 02, 2010 at 10:38:10 from 67.40.115.3

Burt, you are too kind.

From Burt on Tue, Mar 02, 2010 at 12:36:36 from 206.19.214.144

Kelli - I think Wasatch Back is prettier, but Del Sol is my favorite, too.

From Kelli on Tue, Mar 02, 2010 at 13:19:44 from 71.219.89.82

Burt, I would have to agree about that BUT it is hard to enjoy the scenery when you are killing yourself running up a mountain. AND, the last set of legs in AZ was very pretty. In fact, I got to witness the prettiest sunrise I have ever seen while driving to our last major exchange (too bad everyone else in the car was asleep!)

Any word on the runner in the hospital?

From Burt on Tue, Mar 02, 2010 at 13:50:38 from 206.19.214.144

Kelli - they're not saying a whole lot. There's an investigation pending. The kid went to Brophy Prep, meaning he was rich and there's probably lawyers involved. Here's an article: http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/local/articles/2010/03/02/20100302brophy-teen-severely-hurt.html

From Rhett on Tue, Mar 02, 2010 at 15:50:13 from 74.32.219.217

Great race report Burt. I love it when all the details are included. I hope you are recovering well.

From Kelli on Tue, Mar 02, 2010 at 17:05:55 from 71.219.89.82

Was the entire team a HS team?

From Burt on Tue, Mar 02, 2010 at 20:08:13 from 206.19.214.144

Rhett - I don't know if everyone likes all the details, but like to go back and read them. So I'm selfishly writing them mostly for myself.

Kelli - I believe it was. In fact, I heard there were two teams from the same school.

From Burt on Wed, Mar 03, 2010 at 13:19:13 from 206.19.214.144

Sad news. That young man passed away :(

From Kelli on Wed, Mar 03, 2010 at 13:22:56 from 71.219.89.82

NOT GOOD! have they said anything at all about what happened? I kn ow they said the driver was not impaired, but was the guy in the road or something??

From Burt on Wed, Mar 03, 2010 at 13:27:31 from 206.19.214.144

They haven't said a whole lot. At least, I haven't heard anything.
