This morning was the Kimball Stake annual Turkey Trot.  This would be my first year doing it.  The last three  years I've run the Turkey Trot in the Alta Mesa Stake.  I figured I should support my own stake this year.

They don't tell you how far you have to run.  They show you a map and you guess your time.  No watches allowed.  That way, everyone has a shot of winning.  You know what they say.  In the Mormon Church, everyone's a winner.  Looking at the map I could see that we have to run from Southern to Baseline.  That there's two miles.  The rest didn't look like it was much more than half a mile.  So I guessed my time would be 18 minutes and 45 seconds.  Since it was 3.03 miles, I was way off.

At the starting line everyone packed in including the cyclists and the kids.  I heard three young guys behind me talking.  One of them said he's only ran one timed mile and it was like a 4:40 something.  I almost let him take my spot at the front of the starting line, but I didn't.  The race started and the three young guys quickly passed me.  We ran out of the church parking lot and made an immediate right at the next block.  We ran to the end of the street and turned left.  I knew we had to take a right at the end of the next block to head over to the canal.  However, the leaders turned left.  They had cones at every turn, but there wasn't one here.  I slowed down and some guys on bikes asked which way to go.  I said, "Left.  I think those guys went the wrong way."  So I turned left and hoped I wasn't going to lead everyone in the church the wrong way.  That's how the Fundamentalist Church got started.

When I got to the canal I saw another cone, so my apostate fears had subsided.  I ran down to Baseline and looked to see how close people were behind me.  There was one guy hot on my tail and a couple of other people not too far back.  We turned on to 32nd Street and I saw a former Ragnar teammate.  Actually she saw me.  She was just out running and didn't realize the Turkey Trot was going on.  I also saw the three young guys coming the opposite direction.  I chose to state the obvious and told them they went the wrong way.  They knew.  They knew.

When I turned on Jerome I got passed by a guy that looked to be about 10 years my elder.  He was running strong.  Shortly after that the first young guy passed me, then the other two.  I wondered how close I'd be to my guestimated time.  Then we came to the only "hill" as we went over the bridge crossing the US60.  I knew there was only about three quarters of a mile left.  My legs were pretty shot from my 11 mile run Tuesday, so I had no chance at catching up.  We ran up to Southern and turned around.  When my older rival ran by me I put my hand out to give him five.  I was letting him know that I was okay with him passing me.  Today, he was the better man.

Here's a picture of my daughter and me before the race.  She's my only kid that ran with me.

Great job, and happy Thanksgiving!

From Brent on Thu, Nov 25, 2010 at 13:49:09 from 66.7.127.219

Burt, happy thanksgiving, it sounds like a PR effort, too bad the course was off in length and not well marked. I have had the same experience in small races, race organization is shakey. I sure you will break 21 in the next few months, keep up those speed workouts.

Stay Kool, blogging buddy, B of bS Rools out

I think you are the king of unconventional races. You do sleep deprived relay's, open miles, mud runs, and sometimes run in costumes. And then you run in races where they won't tell you how far it is?

Anyway, good job letting someone else win a stake turkey trot.

From Burt on Thu, Nov 25, 2010 at 14:45:16 from 72.223.84.236

Thanks Kelsey. You too!

Brent - A sub 21 would be great.

From Burt on Thu, Nov 25, 2010 at 14:47:09 from 72.223.84.236

Haha AZDM! I was feeling a little guilty.

From Rob Murphy on Thu, Nov 25, 2010 at 14:57:18 from 24.10.248.6

Steak and Turkey? Odd combo.

Better than the "Kimball Turkey Steak Trot.

From RivertonPaul on Thu, Nov 25, 2010 at 15:00:16 from 67.2.86.238

Happy Turkey day.

From ChrisM on Thu, Nov 25, 2010 at 15:08:08 from 86.148.223.166

Sounds fun!

4:40 mile my *bleep*

Oh! Stake!

My bad. :)

From Burt on Thu, Nov 25, 2010 at 17:35:10 from 72.223.84.236

Rob - steak and turkey. The two great tastes that taste great together.

Paul - same to you.

Chris - I don't know. He was pretty fast.

Congrats on another good race Burt. Way to lead your people to the promised land.

From PRE on Thu, Nov 25, 2010 at 23:10:55 from 99.50.214.225

Hi Burt,

I blogged you again at the 11/23/10 entry to keep conversation in one place.

But I am pasting that entry here in case you do not check your older blogs:

Hi Burt,

I am not from Chicago. I am from Connecticut. But I did travel to Chicago this year to run the 10/10/10 Chicago Marathon.

By the way, Oprah ran the Marine Corps Marathon (not Chicago) in 4:29:15 and that was in 1994.

But maybe this will make you feel a little better:

Ted Koppel ran the Marine Corps Marathon in 5:09:08 (1983)

Al Gore ran the Marine Corps Marathon in 4:54:25 (1997)

So Oprah did a bit better than you. But you annihilated Koppel and Gore.

From Kelli on Fri, Nov 26, 2010 at 10:29:46 from 71.219.65.246

So many races, so little time.

It stinks to see you standing there in shorts and a t-shirt. I am moving.

From Burt on Fri, Nov 26, 2010 at 10:37:15 from 72.223.84.236

Joe - I have many Moses-like qualities.

PRE - I guess that does make me feel a little better.

Kelli - Liar! How about you snowbird it? Move to AZ in the winter and UT the rest of the year. I think I want a place in Midway during the summer. That place is gorgeous.

From Kelli on Fri, Nov 26, 2010 at 10:43:33 from 71.219.65.246

I would like to find somewhere that is about 65 all year and move there.

Midway is beautiful, but it is still hot in the summer!

Hope you had a marvelous Thanksgiving, Burt.

From Burt on Fri, Nov 26, 2010 at 10:46:32 from 72.223.84.236

I imagine it is hot. But I wouldn't move there to escape the heat.

I did have a great Thanksgiving. Hope you did, too.

From Kelli on Fri, Nov 26, 2010 at 10:47:49 from 71.219.65.246

Actually, in the summer I guess you really would be escaping the heat as it is about 30 degrees cooler here. Or am I exaggerating?

From Rossy on Fri, Nov 26, 2010 at 17:30:11 from 151.151.16.7

You just keep getting faster and faster, nice job with the Turkey Trot Burt!

From JamesH on Fri, Nov 26, 2010 at 17:42:32 from 74.211.22.194

You know you told those kids to take the wrong turn before the race started just to spite them. Your always trying to lead people astray. Congrats on yet another race.

From Toby on Fri, Nov 26, 2010 at 22:27:31 from 66.133.97.196

Nicely done! Hooray for your daughter running it too!

From Burt on Sat, Nov 27, 2010 at 00:22:24 from 72.223.84.236

Thanks Rossy!

James - I just looked in my junk mail and I got something from a Mr. Dave Holt. I'm not opening it!

Toby - She actually didn't run. She found her friends and they walked most of it. I guess they ran a little.

From april27 on Sat, Nov 27, 2010 at 18:34:35 from 99.188.251.180

shorts and a t-shirt on a turkey run? man I"m jealous!

From Burt on Sun, Nov 28, 2010 at 00:02:08 from 72.223.84.236

April - if it makes you feel better, I did jog over to the start in sweat pants and a long sleeve shirt.

From Teena Marie on Sun, Nov 28, 2010 at 00:03:08 from 67.2.89.224

Nice job. Love the pic. :)

From Burt on Sun, Nov 28, 2010 at 00:11:37 from 72.223.84.236

Teena - did you notice my number? I was the first one there so I picked out my favorite number. 92! 92! 92!

From flatlander on Sun, Nov 28, 2010 at 20:43:35 from 75.214.241.5

Very interesting race, sounds like a great time, and a very nice pace on top of everything. Hope you had a great Thanksgiving.

From Tom on Mon, Nov 29, 2010 at 11:26:54 from 67.199.180.90

Nice job Burt! And I'm glad you didn't lead anyone astray. But that short sleeve picture is kinda cruel.

From runningafterbabies on Mon, Nov 29, 2010 at 15:22:17 from 24.10.211.135

Nice job, Burt. You never fail to have adventures on your runs.

From Burt on Mon, Nov 29, 2010 at 15:26:43 from 206.19.214.144

Mark - I'm not sure what my exact pace was because I wasn't allowed to wear a watch, but I think it was really close to what I posted.

Tom - It was such a beautiful day out, but I should have bundled up anyway. Just to not be mean.

RAB - that's what running's all about.

From Nan on Tue, Nov 30, 2010 at 15:41:27 from 98.245.117.176

PHEW. I'm so glad you avoided apostasy. You had me worried there for a minute.

Way to give a high fiver during the race too. You're such a good sport (true winner).

From Burt on Tue, Nov 30, 2010 at 16:07:02 from 206.19.214.144

Nan - I think anyone who reads my blog on a consistent basis worries about me going apostate. Just as long as my bishop doesn't read it, I'm fine.

From Nan on Tue, Nov 30, 2010 at 16:10:56 from 98.245.117.176

Oh is that how it works? I thought there was someone else who could see all?

Either way, I'm pretty sure turning left at the wrong point in a race is not worthy of hell fire...at least I don't think so.

From Burt on Tue, Nov 30, 2010 at 16:21:24 from 206.19.214.144

Oh, you're talking about Santa Claus. Right.

From Bonnie on Tue, Nov 30, 2010 at 16:25:24 from 128.196.228.134

Nice run Burt! Did you hear me yell "Happy Thanksgiving" to when we drove past the Mesa exit??

From Burt on Tue, Nov 30, 2010 at 16:56:42 from 206.19.214.144

I heard you Bonnie. And I woke up in a cold sweat.

From Bonnie on Tue, Nov 30, 2010 at 17:01:11 from 128.196.228.134

ha ha ha ha ... that's what you get for sleeping on the job.
