Race: 2009 Arizona Road Racers Summer Series #1 - 5k (3.1 Miles) 00:22:16, Place overall: 178, Place in age division: 15
Total Distance
3.10

James W talked me in to doing this race.  It was fun because quite a few of the top road racers in Arizona were in attendance.  James and I carpooled.  As I was driving to his house from Queen Creek I saw that to the northeast, Apache Junction was getting rained on.  I caught the corner of it as I got closer.  To the northwest, south Phoenix was dry, but overcast.  This made for great running conditions.

On Riverton Paul's advice, I made sure to get a good warm-up in.  I tried to stay loose and keep my heart rate up, but it was difficult due to the way the race was run. They handicap the start by age and gender.  As the clock ticked down to the 7:30am start time, the first runners start out.  Then the clock starts up, and James and I were scheduled to start 13 minutes and 52 seconds later.  The cool thing about this is I was passing people the whole race.  The not-so-cool thing was that it got congested.

Mile 1 - 6:59.  My goal was to average 7 minute miles.  I was right on.  I felt good because I hit it with a lot of bobbing and weaving.

Mile 2 - 7:22.  This is where I lost the most time.  At the turn around there was major congestion.  I almost had to come to a complete halt.  I was trying to stay on the sidewalk that ran along the canal, but that was hard to do with the number of people running on it both ways.  There were times I had to run out into the gravel to pass people.  I think all the slowing down plays with your mind, too.

Mile 3 - 7:12.  There was still a lot of congestion, but it started to thin out.  I was beginning to feel the burn.  I wondered why I don't just try to run these races for fun.  I was running right by this tall guy with a blue mohawk.  That helped motivate me to push it.

0.1 miles - 43 sec.  Blue mohawk out kicked me.  I didn't get passed a lot the whole race.  That was encouraging.  178th out of 790 overall.  145th out of 444 males.  15th out of 53 in my age division.  Chicked by 33 chicks.  I had fun.  Under ideal conditions (nocongestion) I think I would have cracked 22 minutes.  Who woulda thought Oreo cookies could taste so good after a race?  Sorry there weren't a lot of funny stories to tell today or any pictures.  I guess I was all business.

Awesome job Burt. Our 5k times are so close.

From Kelli on Sat, May 23, 2009 at 16:12:36 from 71.219.85.34

GREAT JOB BURT!!! Sorry about the congestion. I can not believe it was so bad with the way they staggered the start. How many people ran??

You did awesome, you beat my 5k today by 12 minutes!!!

From allie on Sat, May 23, 2009 at 17:29:11 from 208.110.151.113

nice job! you'll get blue mohawk next time!

HOLY COW you are fast!!! Don't they know to start the speedies first? Congrats on a great time :) Way to go! I love Oreos :)

From seeaprilrun on Sat, May 23, 2009 at 18:27:28 from 68.102.144.140

I think you would have had 7 minute miles no problem if you didn't have to bob and weave and deal with congestion. Great job getting an awesome time anyway!

From colby on Sat, May 23, 2009 at 18:29:22 from 76.23.35.29

Burt, thanks man for the support. Sounds like you didn't so shaby yourself today! That is a pretty nice improvement on your 5k. Especially considering all of the congestion at your turnaround. Keep working hard and if you continue to get your mileage up that time will keep dropping!

From sam on Sat, May 23, 2009 at 18:37:29 from 90.195.99.14

Yay Burt isnt this a PR ????

Well done, on your new time, great with all the congestion too... you gotta take all this into play, just think if you had an open road, I think you would have deffo got the 7 min miles...you will get the mowhawk guy just know you will, and I think the faster run 2 days ago would have taken a little out of your legs too.

WELL DONE and Happy Days Dude (not sure why I typed Dude but it came to mind hahaha)

:) :) :)

From Steve P on Sat, May 23, 2009 at 18:38:03 from 66.60.123.236

Nice job, Burt! Looks like you beat the PR listed on your page. So a bonus!

From Burt on Sat, May 23, 2009 at 19:15:32 from 98.167.151.26

Julie - My time was a litte faster than I originally posted. They put the results on-line already. I wish my half marathon time was close to yours.

Kelli - I updated my report to show how many people ran. And get this. The Arizona female high school record holder for the 1 mile and 2 mile came out to run. She chicked the field!

Allie - I'll shave blue mohawk guy next time I see him. Shave him bald!

Thanks Anji! Guess what. I got my Garmin used and (knock on wood) have never had a problem with it.

Marion - Apparently this is the only race of the series that they do that. I think either way it would have been tough coming back on a 8 foot wide sidewalk.

April - I would have been happy with sub 22 (7:06's.) 15 seconds! It makes me wonder though if maybe slowing down helped me to not crash. Who knows? For such a short distance, probably not.

Colby - thanks. Now that I don't have any races on the horizon, I'm going to try to get some base mileage in.

Sam - PR indeed! And please, call me dude. I like it. LOL.

Steve - time to update!

From Bonnie on Sat, May 23, 2009 at 19:27:33 from 75.164.106.34

Hi Burt!! Great job!! I think you would have broken 22 without the congestion and turn, that easily can cost 16 seconds (not to mention the loss of concentration).

Awesome!!

From montelepsy on Sun, May 24, 2009 at 02:17:16 from 64.235.121.163

The first time I read it I thought you were congested. Glad to see that you didn't catch a cold mid-race. And glad that you PR'ed as well.

From Kelli on Sun, May 24, 2009 at 11:36:55 from 71.219.85.34

Yes---love it when a girl chicks the field!!! But, heck, only 33 beat you----that is awesome! We all know way more girls show up to run than boys, so you did awesome on this way.

Way to go on a new PR, now run an less crowded one to break it again!

From twinkies on Sun, May 24, 2009 at 13:25:44 from 67.166.71.60

Great job Dude. You are getting faster every race. Are you going to run the rest of the series?

From Burt on Sun, May 24, 2009 at 13:49:31 from 98.167.151.26

Bonnie - lately with my training my times keep coming down and down. Sometimes I think I can't get faster, but I still am. So hopefully the trend continues and the next time I'll be shooting for breaking 21. Forget 22.

Mike - Sorry to mislead you. If it makes you feel better, I had a slight sore throat this morning.

Twinkies - Some of the other races are on Sundays. The last time I did a race on Sunday I was out of commission for three months. Coincidence or divine providence?

From Burt on Sun, May 24, 2009 at 13:52:25 from 98.167.151.26

By the way, I looked up blue mohawk guy in the results. Even though he out-kicked me, I beat him overall because he started before me. Nanny-nanny-na-na!

From Bonnie on Sun, May 24, 2009 at 14:50:14 from 128.196.228.134

I am hoping to break 21 as well - though I am not nearly as confident as you, I don't have natural leg speed and I have to work pretty hard to develop what I do have. I will be looking forward to watching your progress!!

From rattletrap on Sun, May 24, 2009 at 14:51:56 from 75.216.252.163

Way to go whippin' that mohawk! Nice PR, that old guy's days are numbered.

From Eric Day on Sun, May 24, 2009 at 21:50:24 from 187.133.9.190

Way to go Burt, you are my man.

Close but traffic slowed you down, ni modo!

Good race, good time.

From mikemac on Sun, May 24, 2009 at 23:23:53 from 192.28.0.21

22:16 Wow Burt! I know that I am going to have to step it up a bit.By the fall I hope I can break into the 22's.Great job!!

From Lucia on Mon, May 25, 2009 at 13:15:17 from 74.9.147.114

Great job Burt! Now you have to challenge Eric and take revenge for me!

From Burt on Mon, May 25, 2009 at 23:20:06 from 98.167.151.26

Thanks for the encouragement everyone.

Lucia, there is nothing that would make me happier than to defend your honor, but I fear I would end like when Robbie was trying to defend Julia's honor in Wedding Singer. Eric would punch me in the nose, metaphorically speaking. And then he'd write a song about how I got punched in the face for sticking my nose in other people's business.

From RivertonPaul on Tue, May 26, 2009 at 10:28:55 from 67.42.27.114

Congrats on the pr. Congestion obviously held you back, but gives you reason to get another pr.

From Michelle N. on Tue, May 26, 2009 at 10:33:32 from 75.162.247.50

You just keep getting faster and faster and faster! Way to go!

From Sasha Pachev on Tue, May 26, 2009 at 13:57:38 from 192.168.1.1

Congratulations on a PR. Slowly your high school speed is starting to come back. Keep on working, I think deep down the 4:59 mile or at least close is still there.

From Matt on Tue, May 26, 2009 at 14:09:50 from 65.121.71.253

Congrats Burt, Imagine if you wern't in the Arizona heat. I am sure the longer the distance the more effect that will have.

From rockness18 on Fri, May 29, 2009 at 20:05:04 from 69.183.233.238

Nice job Burt...you just keep getting faster! Looking sharp as well!

From Vis on Fri, May 29, 2009 at 20:24:42 from 64.255.93.37

Nice race. But you weren't running hard enough if you had fun, unless the fun came after the finish. Great job.

From Merri on Mon, Jun 01, 2009 at 00:16:38 from 207.88.76.69

Great job burt!!!
