Day 90 P90X - Yoga X - Let me start off this entry by saying it was not my intention to finish my P90X routine on the same day as the St. George Marathon or General Conference.  I just heard a talk from Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf about pride which has really caused me to reflect on this entire experience.  There is good pride and there is bad pride.  Bad pride is when you say, "Look at what I just did", which translates into, "I'm better than you."  I can safely say that everyone who did the St. George Marathon is better than I am.  No issues there.  But why then did I seemingly boast my progress every day on the Fast Running Blog and Facebook?  Why did I bother taking 30, 60, and 90 day progress pictures if not too show them off?  Why did I let my wife rip sticky wax strips off my chest and back in an effort to look more appealing?

For the most part I think I can say that it was not because of the bad kind of pride.  Part of me has enjoyed the positive feedback I've received from you all.  But I'm no better than anyone else.  I'm just a guy with a guitar singing his heart out.

I've been running now for almost 4 years.  I've made significant improvements the first couple of years, but I hit a plateau especially with my weight.  I knew I needed to start working other muscles in my body besides those that were being worked out by running alone.  I had a handful of friends that were doing P90X.  At first I thought it would be too extreme for me.  But one friend, 1miletogo, reassured me that I could do it.  He even talked me into joining the Beachbody Team as a way to earn extra money and help other people reach their fitness goals.  This is the main reason for the pictures.  I needed to show that an average joe could make huge improvements over a 90 day period.

I do have to say that I am proud of myself.  I am proud that I set a goal to accomplish the P90X workouts in 90 days, that I stuck with it, and that I finished without missing a day.  I think that's okay to be proud of.  What do you think?  And I want to thank everyone for the support and encouragement throughout this journey.  The last thing I want to say is that anyone can do it.  It is tough, but not impossible.  And it works.  So, with that, I will now unveil the 90 day pictures.  You've been warned.

You achieved a long and challenging goal fitting 90mins of exercise in a day, I think it is ok to be proud of that! Taking the photographs also provides objective evidence of whether the workouts achieve something (which they do!).

It is also inspiring to see other people work hard and achieve their goals on the blog

You do look increasingly happy as the photos get closer to 90 days!

Did you achieve the weight goal?

From 1Miletogo on Mon, Oct 04, 2010 at 07:40:27 from 67.162.148.36

Awesome job Burt! you are an inspiration to us all. Your journey was motivating and like you said shows that anything is possible as long as we set our mind to it. Congrats on your speed improvement in your running too!

From seeaprilrun on Mon, Oct 04, 2010 at 08:04:19 from 68.103.248.145

Awesome job Burt! You look great! What an accomplishment!

From baldnspicy on Mon, Oct 04, 2010 at 08:32:48 from 72.77.68.219

In all seriousness, it always surprises me that the people that are worried about being prideful are the ones that are so far from it. It is more than OK for you to be proud of your accomplishment. Your daily posts weren't about how awesome you are or how others are less than you because they're not doing the same thing. They were always inspiring, usually funny...no, I think always funny, and were a real example to me of the dedication that one can have to setting a goal and achieving it.

Maybe it's because we're all runners on this blog and we all have our own goals we're working towards, whether it's finishing our first jog around the block, finishing our first road race, winning a marathon, or even finishing that first century run. But we all know about goals and how even with the best laid out plans and daily run schedules, things get in the way and we don't follow it 100%. For 90 solid days, you've followed it 100%. There haven't been any slack days, no days where you said it was OK to skip it. You did it and you should be proud of that. THAT, in my mind, is good pride that you shouldn't be ashamed of.

You involved your family all along the way. They saw your dedication and were sometimes almost washed away in your sweat, but the example you set for your children of setting a goal and sticking with it as well as being physically fit and keeping your body healthy will be with them forever.

You're an inspiration, Burt, and I'm glad to see that your running improved at the same time with less actual road time. That's awesome in and of itself and is proof positive that strengthening exercises, stretching and flexibility all help in running. I've been looking for some of that proof because there are so many contradicting reports and studies.

Another long-winded BNS post, but I wanted to share with you some thoughts I've had as I've read your FB posts and some of them here. Your pictures look great. Be proud as a peacock, Burt (if only I had time to Photoshop THAT today)! Huge congrats!! You're truly awesome!

From Lily on Mon, Oct 04, 2010 at 10:49:44 from 67.199.181.73

Holy #$%^! You manscaped! Nice work on the body changes! I am super proud of you Burt!

From Chad on Mon, Oct 04, 2010 at 11:04:09 from 168.177.153.5

Looking good Burt. That's impressive (except for maybe the "love handles", just kidding. Don't take me seriously. :). Any way, that's some serious results. What about a performance comparison from start to finish? Also, what's next? Do you do the thing again? Do you have a plan to maintain? I'm curious about life after P90X.

From ChrisM on Mon, Oct 04, 2010 at 11:09:34 from 86.178.235.148

Is there are Finisher's wall of fame on the P90X website? if not there should be!

From jun on Mon, Oct 04, 2010 at 11:18:44 from 66.239.250.209

I had just written a whole thing about how you are not being prideful, but for some reason it didn't post and I lost it. I don't want to rewrite it.

Let me just say that I think its awesome what you did. Congrats to you, you earned it.

From Marathon Dreamer on Mon, Oct 04, 2010 at 11:23:54 from 75.3.206.157

I am so proud of you Burt!! You stuck with it and achieved great things!! I have got to say that I am also impressed by the fact that you allowed your wife to wax you... ouchie! Did your neighbors think an animal was dying while she was pulling off those wax strips?? ;-)

From LuzyLew on Mon, Oct 04, 2010 at 12:34:53 from 208.187.197.42

Way to be the right kind of proud. I know about the weight plateu. I always say, you can run ultra marathons, but it's the calories that count. Depressing but true (for those of us who LOVE food). Congrats on finishing the P90X. It looks like it gave you a good upperbody work out too. Way to stay the course and keep your goal. I need to follow your example. I've been slacking and need to get back on course. AWesome post!

From Burt on Mon, Oct 04, 2010 at 13:08:03 from 206.19.214.144

Chris - if there's one thing I regret it's the weight loss over the last month. I wasn't eating as healthy as I was the second month, and I could have done a lot better. I lost 4 lbs, but I think that was all hair.

1MileToGo - Thanks for all the help and encouragement along the way. We need to get you blogging.

April - I'm sure your husband will look 10 times better than me when he's all done :)

BNS - For some reason I love your long winded posts. And I wholeheartedly agree with everything you said. Thanks.

Lily - Thank you! Coming from the blog supermodel, that means a lot. And as my wife was yanking the hair off my body I was thinking, "Lily better appreciate this!" LOL!

Chad - don't think I can't see my own love handles. What's next? I'm going to keep doing the Ab Ripper X workouts three times a week. I'll probably do X Stretch, Yoga, and Plyo once a week. I'm really going to focus on running for a while. I'll probably do P90X again next year some time. I may even do Insanity first. I hear that'a tough one.

Chris - a lot of people post their pictures on their profiles for the WOWY Gym which you can find on the Beachbody website.

Jun - thanks for sparing me the reprimand. I'm so sensitive.

MD - I think my neighbors are used to all the screaming and yelling that comes from a 9 person household. LOL!

LuzyLew - I really do love food. I wish I was more like Kelli and April and could eat whatever I want without the weight gain. Thanks!

Congrats. Well, done.

From allie on Mon, Oct 04, 2010 at 18:40:48 from 174.19.51.35

great job, burt. if i were as wise and articulate as BNS, i would have said the same thing...but i'll just have to go with the "ditto" on everything he said. it's a big accomplishment, and there is nothing wrong with sharing it and being proud of it. plus, i think you are the most encouraging and supportive person on this blog, so it's okay to receive some of that in return. give a little, take a little, as they say. they being...

a big congrats to you. next up,insanity!

From JamesH on Mon, Oct 04, 2010 at 18:45:36 from 74.211.22.194

Burt!! You look good! Almost good enough to eat. Congrats on working through and not missing any days. You are the man.

From rAtTLeTrAp on Mon, Oct 04, 2010 at 19:01:13 from 75.196.23.115

Double ditto on everything allie and bns said. I don't always comment, but I read all your blogs, especially over the past 3 months. Thanks for sharing.

I still can't believe you waxed and didn't spray tan.

From JD on Mon, Oct 04, 2010 at 19:04:11 from 209.183.51.130

"Serenity now, insanity later."

Congratulations Burt. Way to follow through on a tough course. I can't decide whether or not to thank you for the pics.

From Burt on Mon, Oct 04, 2010 at 19:06:28 from 206.19.214.144

RP - Uh, well done to you at SGM.

allie - Thanks. You are more encouraging and supportive than me. Well, at least when you give encouragement and support it actually means something to people. :)

James - that's almost as funny as getting punched in the junk.

From Burt on Mon, Oct 04, 2010 at 19:08:15 from 206.19.214.144

RT - I tried to sunbathe on my lunch break for the last week. It didn't work. :(

JD - well said. Don't thank me for the pics. In fact, forget you ever saw them.

From SlowJoe on Mon, Oct 04, 2010 at 21:28:04 from 69.22.186.29

Those are some pretty impressive results. I think I can say we're all genuinely interested in your progress and you'd be in a lot more trouble if you DIDN'T post about it. Anyway, I'm glad to see how much success you had with it, congrats!

From Merri on Mon, Oct 04, 2010 at 23:34:06 from 160.7.252.148

you did awesome burt!

From catherine on Tue, Oct 05, 2010 at 00:14:04 from 72.254.114.181

Congratulations! Thanks for the example of consistency. And I agree with everyone else - you're inspiring. You're not the bad kind of prideful.

So are you going to keep up with the waxing? It hurts less the second time...

From Burt on Tue, Oct 05, 2010 at 00:30:19 from 68.225.214.248

Thanks Joe!

Thanks Merri! You did awesome, too. Just think of the last thing you did. It was awesome.

Catherine - My waxing days are over. Now you know that I was just kidding about my comment on Nan's blog.

From Merri on Tue, Oct 05, 2010 at 00:42:46 from 160.7.252.148

I just picked my nose, it was pretty awesome.

From nicole on Tue, Oct 05, 2010 at 00:50:07 from 76.22.105.167

You rock. Period. It is so incredibly impressive that you did p90x - the FULL actual workout in 90 days. That takes dedication and you SHOULD be proud! This is the good kind of proud. Way to go!

From Burt on Tue, Oct 05, 2010 at 01:21:11 from 68.225.214.248

Merri - Nobody does it better.

Nicole - Thanks!

From Scott Wesemann on Tue, Oct 05, 2010 at 02:09:57 from 75.165.249.90

Duuuuuude, seriously nice job. You lost your gut and gained some lats. You look toned all over. Congrats. I was going to tease you for the pics, but I'm so impressed I'll give you a pass.

From runningafterbabies on Tue, Oct 05, 2010 at 10:14:40 from 67.161.249.168

Yay Burt! I only lasted 2 weeks.

From Burt on Tue, Oct 05, 2010 at 10:42:26 from 68.225.214.248

Thanks Scott. I hope you weren't looking at these pictures at work.

Melody - you're pregnant! You can start again after the baby comes.

From Mike on Tue, Oct 05, 2010 at 19:20:47 from 71.195.169.12

As far as pride's concerned, if you've got it, flaunt it. Also, it's not too late to wax your neglected and plentiful calf and shin hair.

From Colby Park on Fri, Oct 08, 2010 at 02:02:24 from 208.79.15.162

nice job Burt, looking good. So, the big question...do you recommend the program to others?

From Burt on Fri, Oct 08, 2010 at 09:53:05 from 68.225.214.248

Mike - My chest and back were so hairy that we ran out of wax strips for anything else.

Colby - I DO recommend it. In fact, I now work for the company as an Independent Coach. Click on the link under my profile :)
