That is so impressive! I'm really proud of your transformation, Burt. And I can say that honestly. I've seen you in person.

From AmberG on Wed, May 18, 2011 at 00:56:57 from 67.2.211.77

Burt, not boring! WOW. . . impressive transformation, even minus the reflection pool. :)

From Rob on Wed, May 18, 2011 at 01:26:57 from 72.254.57.16

Very interesting, since I inadvertently stopped running 2 months ago my blog got extremely boring (so I thought), but I've noticed that my average hit count slowly started creeping up. Apparently FRB'ers like boring, non-running related posts. Interesting indeed.

From Burt on Wed, May 18, 2011 at 01:34:36 from 72.223.90.79

Melody - I was totally holding in my gut when I met you.

Amber - The reflection pool makes me look twice as fat. Because it's a reflection.

Rob - Interesting and mysterious...

BURT REFLECTION POND OR NO REFLECTION POND! THIS IS A GREAT TRANSFORMATION!

WHAT MADE YOU START RUNNING I WANT TO KNOW YOUR STORY.

From Burt on Mon, May 23, 2011 at 10:33:25 from 72.223.90.79

Hi Heather! Well, I ran in high school because my friend told me I was too skinny to play football. I believed him, but I have no regrets becoming a track star. Then I kept running for a year as I was training for the one and only local 5k that my small town offered. But I injured my knee a couple of days before the race. That was pretty much the last time I ran up until January of 2007. Up until then I was playing basketball three times a week trying to live out my fantasy of becoming an NBA player (or at least a street ball legend.) But I kept getting hurt more, and I was steadily gaining weight. One year I broke my heel. The next year I broke my wrist. Then the next year I twisted my ankle real bad. I also had balooned up to 254 lbs. That's when I knew I had to do something different so why not go back to my roots?

Luckily at that same time one guy in my office at work organized a Biggest Loser contest and another was putting together a team for this fun little race his wife had heard about called Ragnar. I didn't think I'd be able to do it, so I declined. But I charged right in on the Biggest Loser. I was having a Slim Fast for breakfast, salad for lunch, and usually fish for dinner. And I started doing jumping jacks and running in place. It wasn't long before I could actually feel that hey, I could probably go for a run without collapsing from exaustion after 200 feet. So, I shook off the fear of running outside where people might actually see me, and went for a 3/4 mile run. It wasn't easy, but I didn't stop, and I kept doing it for a week. I noticed that my endurance was coming back.

So, one of the Ragnar runners got injured, and I jumped on board. Knowing that I would have to be able to run at least 7 miles at one time without stopping, I slowly built my miles up. At the end of two months when the Biggest Loser contest was over and Ragnar was just a couple of weeks away, I had dropped 42 lbs and could run 8 miles nonstop. I haven't looked back since. :)

Sorry to everyone who has already heard that story.

From heathercolbypeck on Mon, May 23, 2011 at 11:39:44 from 24.97.75.130

WELL THATS A GREAT STORY BURT.

YOUR MY NEWEST HERO.

From Rob on Mon, May 23, 2011 at 11:44:32 from 206.71.84.68

I'd never heard your story.

From Burt on Mon, May 23, 2011 at 12:00:49 from 72.223.90.79

Heather - I am not a hero. I am a mere defender of the office. You know who's a real hero? Hiro, from Heroes. That's a hero... Also, Bono.

Rob - What do you mean you haven't heard my story? You lived my story. It's the exact same as yours. Except you're way faster.

From Rob on Mon, May 23, 2011 at 12:18:37 from 206.71.84.68

Same story except I'm not nearly as funny, popular, and have never won a biggest looser contest.

From Merri on Mon, May 23, 2011 at 12:49:23 from 160.7.252.148

I liked that story, never read it before.

From Burt on Mon, May 23, 2011 at 12:53:24 from 72.223.90.79

Rob - just keep trying to be boring. You'll get there.

Merri - Do you think you can use my story in your next fireside talk?

From Merri on Mon, May 23, 2011 at 13:27:01 from 160.7.252.148

yes burt and probably my kids bedtime story tonight.
