I'm trying to be a smarter runner.  The problem is, I don't really know what I'm doing.  Since I had a couple of fast miles yesterday I figured I should do a recovery run today.  Is that smart or no?  Sandy Dune, what say you?  Or should recovery runs be after long runs only?

Time - 52:29 (avg. pace 9:23)

Splits - 9:38, 9:14, 9:23, 9:24, 9:17, 5:33 for 0.59 (9:22 pace)

I am not expert, but I agree. Recover all you want. If you do anything hard the day before )speed or distance) you get to recover the next day.

Have a good day, Burt.

I agree with Kelli. :o)

Sounds Smart to me!

From Merri on Tue, Jan 05, 2010 at 10:43:47 from 160.7.252.148

I like to follow Hal Higdon's training guides and then I just do what he says to do. :) then there is no thinking involved.

I think if you want to be a smarter runner you should try doing calculus in your head while doing mile repeats. :)

Otherwise, just recover on days when you feel like you worked hard the previous day. Or you can be a super wimp like me and just go to 3 days a week running and cross train every other day.

From Aaron Kennard on Tue, Jan 05, 2010 at 13:20:52 from 174.51.250.151

I'm DEFINITELY not an expert on smart running, but I would ask the question to yourself...why do I run?

Once you answer that question, it should be easy to figure out how you should run. Part of my answer to myself is because it feels good, I love the feeling and fitness it gives me, and I want to do it a lot.

What that answer gets me to do is listen to my body. I honestly don't care whether I go fast or whether I go slow on any particular day, and some days it feels good to push the pace, other days it feels good to go EXTREMELY slow. Because I don't have a pre-set expectation for any day, I thoroughly enjoy each one. And as it turns out, I have been getting faster and feeling good the whole time.

But like I said, you probably shouldn't listen to me, because I'm no expert on 'smart running'. But I sure do enjoy myself.

ditto on all above. just to lazy to type it.

From Lily on Tue, Jan 05, 2010 at 14:57:27 from 160.7.253.229

I say recover for a day, then push it the next. You know an every other day ---- type of thing. I got faster doing that.

From montelepsy on Tue, Jan 05, 2010 at 15:02:36 from 64.235.121.163

I'm a card-carrying expert on not smart running. Just do the opposite of me.

From Kelli on Tue, Jan 05, 2010 at 16:51:59 from 71.219.96.112

Aaron, I like your answer. That is THE way to run.

From Samantha Dean-Howard on Tue, Jan 05, 2010 at 17:44:35 from 90.201.147.218

smarty pants eh Burt :)

From auntieem on Tue, Jan 05, 2010 at 18:44:14 from 24.17.177.218

Some people in my world believe that "smart" and "runner" do not belong in the same sentence. I disagree, of course, and I think that a hard effort should generally be followed by an easier effort day. That being said, I break this rule all the time!

From vinh on Tue, Jan 05, 2010 at 19:41:10 from 71.68.254.197

Good recovery run Burt! I agree with everyone, just listen to your body. Let it dictate your pace.

From artichoke on Tue, Jan 05, 2010 at 20:29:59 from 71.37.112.45

If you want to stay healthy take an easy day or a day off after every hard or long run. I think I heard Ed Eyestone say that. Happy running in AZ!

From Nan Kennard on Tue, Jan 05, 2010 at 23:04:25 from 174.51.250.151

Aaron, you should copy that comment. That is future book material! No plagiarizing now Burt!

From Burt on Tue, Jan 05, 2010 at 23:38:30 from 98.177.216.165
