Today was what we affectionately refer to as a recovery run.  Okay, who's smart?  Tell me what a recovery run is.  If you truly want to recover, shouldn't you just...not run?  I'm sure there's some science to it.  All I know is you're supposed to go run slower than normal.  So that's what I did.  I couldn't get the "speed wagon" to read my speed this morning.  Maybe tomorrow I'll wear a sign on my butt that says "WIDE LOAD."

Time - 51:10 (avg. pace 9:10)

Splits - 9:22, 9:11, 9:08, 9:04, 9:09, 5:16 for 0.59 (8:59 pace)

Temp - 41 (I actually wore sweat pants and a long sleeve shirt today.)

Awesome Burt, finally a recovery run from you. You are always pushing the pace hard.

From seeaprilrun on Tue, Dec 15, 2009 at 12:13:36 from 68.103.250.39

I'm glad you had a good "recovery" run. Do you feel recovered?

From vinh on Tue, Dec 15, 2009 at 12:32:21 from 75.77.22.187

Good recovery run Burt! A recovery run to me is just a slow/easy pace run that helps me loosen my legs up a lil bit from the previous hard day of running.

From Burt on Tue, Dec 15, 2009 at 12:39:52 from 12.231.112.98

Eric - I know. I always seem to push the aerobic threshold.

April - I do feel recovered. Thanks for asking :)

Vinh - So would I be correct in assuming that stretching afterwards is of the utmost importance?

From Nan Kennard on Tue, Dec 15, 2009 at 12:51:33 from 174.51.250.151

Yeah, its all about heart rate. If you're keeping your HR 30-40 beats lower than your threshold runs and races, your body will not feel nearly as taxed but its still building aerobic strength. Looks like you were in need of a good recovery run after those great miles on Saturday. NICE ONE!

From Burt on Tue, Dec 15, 2009 at 12:57:46 from 12.231.112.98

Thanks Nan.

41 degrees and you are wearing sweats? Just reading that makes me sweat!! Nice recovery run!

From flatlander on Tue, Dec 15, 2009 at 14:19:17 from 198.207.244.102

Good run Burt, to me a recovery run is anything I can manage after a hard run, not sure what happens but it feels good.

Do you have flashing lights to go with your sign? Blinking maybe? Neon orange?

Recovery run the science ;

http://www.realbuzz.com/blogs/u/Footnote/athlete-s-foot/posts/tip-of-the-day-recovery-runs/

although there is no science in this article LOL

I think the fact of warming up your muscles helps flush blood through the system enabling a quicker recovery and less stiffness !

You make me feel hot running sweats in the that temp ha ha

Burt, stretching is very important..especially if your legs are pretty tight. I should follow my own advice more often. I only spend a few mins to stretch before/after my runs. I should probably stretch longer.

From Lyman on Tue, Dec 15, 2009 at 22:25:03 from 75.169.188.83

good point burt, when someone says recovery I imagine myself in bed having a late breakfast with the TV on.

From Brent on Tue, Dec 15, 2009 at 22:32:52 from 76.8.201.223

Burt, so you had that wide load in granny gear today, drop that load off and lead foot it, give that speed wagon, without aereo, something to chase.
