Another run home from work.  This time I wanted to take my bike route so I could get 17 and change.  I wanted to do this to determine whether or not I would do the Mesquite Marathon.  I really started to crash towards the end.  I know some of it was because it was dark, but still I was cramping up pretty bad.  I don't think I'm ready for a marathon, but I haven't ruled out the half marathon.  The marathon only costs $55, and the half marathon costs $45.  It seems silly not to pay the extra $10 and not do the marathon, doesn't it?  Such a bargain price.  Actually $55 is a steal for a marathon.  I don't know of any cheaper.  And $45 for a half is pretty reasonable.  But I know there are a handful of bloggers that will be there, so I'd like to go.

I wanted to try Hammer Gels out on the run home tonight, but I forgot to go to Sports Chalet.  On the way to work I swung by, but they don't open up 'til 10am!  I planned on eating pasta for lunch to carb up, but my friends Brad and Stefani took me out to lunch.  We had delicioso Mexican food.  Thanks guys!  I stopped at Fresh and Easy on the way back to the office to see if they had any Gels.  All they had was Power Bars, so I bought two of them, chocolate and cookies & cream.

At 4pm I shut 'er down at the office and went to change.  Problem.  I accidently packed two Body Armor shirts instead of my Performance Underwear.  Dang it!  Well, I guess I'd have to go commando and hope my shorts weren't too see through.  My saving grace would be that it's getting dark shortly after 6pm.  (Why on earth would I tell the world that I wasn't wearing any underwear?  My grandkids are going to read this someday.)

I took off with the plan to stop every four miles, eat half a bar, and drink a quarter of my 32 oz. Gatorade.  It was 64 degrees when I left, and I wondered if my Gatorade would actually unthaw.  Around mile two it seemed like it might actually melt.  However, my hands were frozen.  I stuck to the game plan with the exception of eating on the run and stopping only to swig down my Gatorade.

When I got to the halfway point I tried to text my wife "half way."  Texting while running is a talent I lack.  It wasn't until I got home that I realized I texted "hale yax."  Now it was starting to get dark.  I was running on the dirt with the traffic, but when it was too dark I crossed the street and ran against the traffic in the bike lane.  I didn't like that.  The posted speed limit on Ellsworth Road is 45mph, but the average speed is 60mph.  Then when the bike lane ended, I went up and ran on the farm road, and that's when my times really slowed down.

I got to the round-about which means 0.4 miles to go.  I called my wife again so she could talk me in.  My son ran the last 0.15 miles with me.  I was dead.  Dead tired that is.  I didn't have the energy to go upstairs and shower right away.  Dinner was almost ready, so I opted not to shower but made sure to keep my distance from everyone because I stink bad.  My home teachers came over at 8pm.  I had to sit in an isolated chair with my legs together.

Time - 2:51:25 (avg. pace 9:51)

Splits - 8:41, 8:56, 9:00, 9:04, 9:05, 9:09, 8:42, 9:05, 9:27, 9:24, 9:51, 10:07, 10:40, 10:52, 11:26, 11:27, 11:32, 4:59 for 0.41 (12:00 avg.)

Wow, Burt. Awesome miles. What are you trying to prove?

From auntieem on Fri, Oct 30, 2009 at 00:01:50 from 67.182.145.8

Really? I've been booted off the mileage board page 1, but probably not you.

From Burt on Fri, Oct 30, 2009 at 01:33:33 from 98.167.151.26

Transylvania Travis - I'm making a statement. Read my lips, "I AM AN IDIOT."

Hauntie Em - Dang it. I'm barely not on either. The weeks not over though.

From sam Dean-Howard on Fri, Oct 30, 2009 at 05:55:41 from 90.201.147.228

Wow Way to go Igor well done thats so good, great mileage, and remember long training runs are supposed to be 1-1.30 mins or even 2 mins slower than estimated marathon pace, I think youve done exceptional, I run my long runs at 8/8.30 pace.... You train a different system going long and slow.

Okay Dude no no sorry Igor, I think your son is great running that last bit with you thats so cool well done... I think maybe you on mile 15 you boinked ! really you need to eat that bit more carbs the night before a long run as well as breakfast hey I did great off a full english last sunday LOL

High Five

Great piccy too :-)

From ChrisM on Fri, Oct 30, 2009 at 06:32:16 from 130.88.123.4

Nice job Burt!

So you are doing the marathon for sure? At $2.1 per mile that is a bargain!

The trick to sending texts whilst running is to write the text before the run and save it in the drafts section of your phone, then you don't have to type it out when you are running!

And I'm glad you avoided any potholes.

From Brent on Fri, Oct 30, 2009 at 10:36:00 from 76.8.201.223

Burt, how much time before the marathon? Hey, sign up for the marathon, you can always do the run two miles, walk a minute - 17 is a good long run, I did my first marathon with only one long 17 mile run. 300 commando points for your effort. By the way, Hammer Gels are the best. If I lived closer, would do the marathon and pace you.

Performance underwear? Hum, that could have several meanings? Leave that one alone.

Stay Kool, B of BS Rools out

Wow Burt, great run, Yo tha Man !! Awesome.

Texting while running, mmm? I don't think I could even make a call while running, would have to stop, search, press send & hope I get an answer...

From allie on Fri, Oct 30, 2009 at 14:00:13 from 67.177.43.41

great run burt. i think you should do the marathon.

i have never tried texting while running but i know i would be horrible at it...i can't even mess with my ipod without running of the curb or falling into a ditch.

From JD on Fri, Oct 30, 2009 at 14:44:42 from 70.96.78.157

All hale the yax!

Great run.

From Twinkies on Fri, Oct 30, 2009 at 14:54:48 from 134.24.147.249

Great run Burt. I can't believe you saw a yax. Those creatures our had to spot in the dark.

From Rhett on Fri, Oct 30, 2009 at 15:10:49 from 74.42.168.210

Nice run and nice thinking to keep those legs together while the HTs were over. I guess they had to do their HTing early this month since the last day is a holiday?

From Burt on Fri, Oct 30, 2009 at 15:31:11 from 68.76.197.194

Howler - I was so close to calling it in, but then I would think, "I've done 14 miles. What's 3.5 more?"

Chris Munster - I had the same idea about texting. But it sounds like it would be too much work setting it up, and I waste so much time on the blog, I wouldn't be able to. LOL.

Brent Mydland - don't be dogging my Performance Underwear.

Eerie Day - you couldn't do it because you run too fast.

allie cat - I don't know if I want to put myself through the pain.

Devil Derum - My wife texted me back - what? I thought for sure she was going to come and get me.

Stinkies - At first I thought it was a chupacabra. No joke though, I swore I saw a black wolf in the middle of the day running down Southern Ave.

Rat - The very first missionary correlation meeting I had in Spain I was treated to a nice view of the branch mission leader's scrottiserie regions as he sat there with his "holy" sweat pants on and nothing else. I'll never forget it.

From RivertonPaul on Fri, Oct 30, 2009 at 15:37:15 from 67.42.27.114

Great report. Good job not flashing the home teachers.

From Burt on Fri, Oct 30, 2009 at 15:46:17 from 68.76.197.194

RivertonPaul bearer - You have no idea. One companion just moved, so he brought his wife.

From sam Dean-Howard on Fri, Oct 30, 2009 at 18:35:23 from 90.201.147.128

Ha ha texting whilst running thats funny, I have tried and nearly fallen over like Allie Im clumsy and my texts go to the wrong people when Im walking never mind running :-)

From Burt on Fri, Oct 30, 2009 at 18:37:15 from 68.76.197.194

BTW allie cat - thanks for exposing the picture of me on your blog. I gave that to you for private use.

From Nan Kennard on Fri, Oct 30, 2009 at 18:38:21 from 174.51.250.151

Wow! Nice run! I agree with everyone else that has said Run the Marathon! You can do it! You've been training so diligently. You may as well let it all pay off with a Marathon. You'll be amazed at how much better you feel with lots of other people running around, aid stations and support people on the course. There is a lot of synergy to it. In some sense racing the marathon is easier than running 20 miles all by yourself.

From BlondeRunner on Fri, Oct 30, 2009 at 23:37:46 from 68.164.42.57

Great job Burt. Good read (and the no underwear part is too funny). lol...sounds like you had a good plan

From Teena on Fri, Oct 30, 2009 at 23:57:18 from 67.177.20.13

I am impressed with your mad skills! I won't even carry my phone with me on a long run -- too heavy! ha!!! :)

Seriously ... nice job tough guy!

Btw, how was the chili cook off?

From josse on Sat, Oct 31, 2009 at 17:51:13 from 70.193.220.136

I would just do the half, that is what I decided after doing a half this morning. I just don't think my body could cover that distance, a half is easier to put my head around. See you there!

From seeaprilrun on Sat, Oct 31, 2009 at 21:08:38 from 68.103.250.39

Awesome run Burt! Now are you sore? I betcha you could make it through the marathon and pr!

From mike mcclellan on Sun, Nov 01, 2009 at 18:24:39 from 192.28.0.21

Man you sure making it hard to stay ahead of you on the mileage board. Great run Burt!

From Burt on Mon, Nov 02, 2009 at 14:13:42 from 68.76.197.194

Frankennardestein - While I do believe everything you said, you have to understand that a guy of my physical geometry tends to crash pretty hard. A lot faster than a lung on a stick.

Bloody Runner - it was a very liberating run. lol

Hallowteena - the chili cook off was a fun time. The memories of it are still lingering.

Jigsaw Josse - thanks for being the voice of reason. Everyone almost had me convinced to kill myself.

SeeaprilRIP - I'm not that sore. And with a PR of 5:18:49, um yeah, I'm sure I'll break that. lol

Michael Meyers - You got me last week, but I'm coming for you this week.
