Time - 23:09 (avg. pace 7:29)

Splits - 7:25, 7:39, 7:27, 0:39 0.10 for (6:43 pace)

Temp - 101 (6:30pm)

This is was a fun little race sponsored by the Tempe Road Runners Sports Store.  It's not chipped and no awards are given out.  They just do it once a month to promote fitness and get people in their store.  I think about 30 people showed up.  There were a lot of people from the East Valley Runners.  One of them invited me to come running with them Saturday.  I may just do it.

At 4:30pm I threw X Stretch in the DVD player because my legs had been sore all day.  I fast forwarded to the leg and back stretches.  It felt pretty good.  Then I drove to Tempe.  I got out of the truck and did some more stretching while I waited for Garmin to sync.  Then I saw this lady get in to her van.  I saw that her shirt said something...Barcelona España.  So I kept staring at her until I could see the rest.  La mision de Barcelona España.  That's where I served!  So I went up to her and made her roll down her window.  Turns out she was there a couple years after me.  She met her husband there.  He was probably a year after me.  It was cool talking to her, but she didn't serve in any of the cities I did.

We had to cross McClintock Road to get to the starting line.  Four of us braved to cross when the light turned green.  Everyone else crossed on the next green light.  I didn't know they were going to start the race right there and now I was in the back.  Oh well.  With as hot as it was, I wanted to take it easy and not push it too much.  [Pause in race report to tell you what my 5 year old just shared with me:  "Dad, have you looked into mom's eyes?  It's the only way to know if she's the one.  If you see just beautiful, you know she's the one."]

The "race" started and I waited for an opening.  After about 20 seconds it thinned out enough for me to go around and run in the landscape area and pass some people.  Then I jumped back on the sidewalk.  There were three guys and  one girl in front of me.  The third place guy was wearing a tan cotton shirt and swim trunks.  I wondered how he would do.  Turns out he did pretty good, staying in 3rd place the whole way.  Another guy in a yellow shirt was running right next to me.  We weren't making up any ground on the girl.  At 1.2 miles we turned from Rio Salado north on Rural Road.  If you're familiar with Tempe, you know that the ASU campus is right there.  The yellow shirt EVR had passed me up.  Then we ran over a bridge.  This is where I caught up to the girl.  We ran shoulder to shoulder up to the turn around point.  Then I started to open my pace up a little.  She stayed right behind me along with another guy.  After we crossed the bridge again and were about to turn on to Rio Salado I hear a thud behind me.  The girl took a little tumble.  The other guy totally stopped and I was about to.  We both asked her in unison if she was all right.  She was good, so I kept going.  We joked about it afterwards.

I kept trying to push the pace, but not getting out of my comfort zone.  Yellow shirt was about 40 yards ahead of me, and I knew I could catch him if I kicked it in.  However, it was hot and what would be the point?  It's just a fun race.  So I was content to cruise in with my 5th place finish.  The girl passed the other guy and finished about a minute behind me.  Then I went back to the store and grabbed a water bottle.  I headed back to the street to wait for everyone.  I toweled down and decided to change into the dry shirt I brought.  As I was changing everyone crossed the road.  I tried to hurry, but the cotton T wasn't cooperating with my damp pits and stuff.  So I let everyone walk by me and it was a wave of stinky body odor.  P-U!  LOL!  I should have let everyone know how bad they stunk.  Then I hung around for the drawing.  They gave away 5 hats and a free pair of shoes.  I didn't win :(  But it was fun, and I'll be back next month.

Day 46 P90X - Yoga X - This is a great workout after a race.  I'm still struggling with balance postures, but I'm doing a lot better with crane.  Oh, which also is a balance posture, but not a one-legged, don't fall down, balance posture.

My son wants to join cross country.  We sent him on a run around the block.  It's just over a half mile.  I had him take the Garmin so I would know that he wasn't slacking.  He ran it at a 6:26 pace.  Pretty soon he'll be faster than me.

Nice run - I'm still kind of new to running but 101 degrees does not sound ideal to me.

Why are you leaving us in suspense with what the shirt said?

From CookieLegs on Fri, Aug 20, 2010 at 00:42:31 from 70.56.100.203

Burt - that's a darn good time for running in that Tempe heat!!

From Burt on Fri, Aug 20, 2010 at 00:57:31 from 68.225.214.248

Sorry Joe. The full report is up now. I was interrupted by family prayer.

Thanks Adele! I drank a Gatorade before to make sure I was hydrated.

From SlowJoe on Fri, Aug 20, 2010 at 01:23:13 from 109.70.68.174

Ah - got it. Looks like it was a smellerific good time. Enjoyed the HS photos you posted earlier this week too, minus the crotch shot.

From Burt on Fri, Aug 20, 2010 at 04:08:31 from 68.225.214.248

You didn't like that shot? I thought it would be your favorite. Just check out those leg muscles!

From ChrisM on Fri, Aug 20, 2010 at 04:17:24 from 130.88.123.4

awesome Burt, well done on top 5 finish!

LOL @ making your son run with the garmin!

From Bec on Fri, Aug 20, 2010 at 10:45:37 from 76.23.55.210

Good job on your race! So, tell me truly how you feel about P90X. I am really thinking about taking it up when I get all recovered. I did one workout once and it scared me away. Plus, is there a diet or something? Anyway, just give me the low-down.

From Burt on Fri, Aug 20, 2010 at 10:52:17 from 206.19.214.144

Chris - As soon as I told him to take it, he knew he couldn't mess around. So he bit the bullet and actually cranked out a decent pace.

Bec - I love it. I'm finding muscles in places I never knew existed. lol! But I will say that my mileage has gone down. I've only got about 20 miles a week if I'm lucky. But I'm okay with it because I know that I'm improving all other aspects of my body, so that when I do start running more miles, I'm going to be so much better off. Back in February when I barely started the first time and was running a lot more, I could feel the difference immensely. For the first time since high school I felt like a "real runner."

From Burt on Fri, Aug 20, 2010 at 10:53:36 from 206.19.214.144

Oh, there is a diet, but I haven't been following it. In fact, I haven't even read it to see what it all entails, but I know you eat like 6 or 8 times a day. Not big meals, but enough to keep your metabolism running.

From Britta on Fri, Aug 20, 2010 at 12:31:15 from 99.120.43.3

A 5k in 100 degree weather!! You are my hero. I am miserably enduring my Hot pregnant summer. It makes me too grumpy!!

From KP on Fri, Aug 20, 2010 at 12:40:39 from 65.208.22.26

i want to know what your response was to your 5-year old!

From Rhett on Fri, Aug 20, 2010 at 12:45:17 from 74.32.211.152

Good job racing in the summer heat Burt. The eyes are the window to the soul.

From Burt on Fri, Aug 20, 2010 at 13:24:18 from 206.19.214.144

Britta - Hang in there. At least you're not 8 or 9 months pregnant in the heat of summer.

KP - I told her I would do it.

Rhett - thanks. I'm optomistic that once it cools down I can smash my PR.

From The Quiet Pirate on Fri, Aug 20, 2010 at 14:31:02 from 152.26.59.252

Hey Real Runner- that temp, those paces- you're awesome!!

From Bec on Fri, Aug 20, 2010 at 14:39:36 from 76.23.55.210

Cool! I want to give that P90 a little more time to see what might happen to me. All I know is I like watching the guys on the video. :)

Madrid!

From Burt on Fri, Aug 20, 2010 at 15:44:54 from 206.19.214.144

QP - If I would have cranked out a sub 7 like you, then I would really be awesome.

Bec - Me too. There's Adam (had to put his hands in the air, he's a hot shot), Daniel Haws (when my good man Daniel did this the first time, he was stumbling and tumbling. Now he's calm of mind.), Phil (now Phil's gonna shock you. He's a karate man.), Scott Fifer (the guy lives on a boat!), Joe (I love you like a brother, man.) They're all so dreamy. What?

From Burt on Fri, Aug 20, 2010 at 15:47:23 from 206.19.214.144

Burt, nice pace. That p90x must be working.

From Burt on Fri, Aug 20, 2010 at 21:22:15 from 68.225.214.248

Thanks Kam. I think it's working. At the least, I'm getting stronger. I'll get faster once I start running more again.

From Marathon Dreamer on Sat, Aug 21, 2010 at 10:56:38 from 69.63.212.182

Way to go Burt!! Awesome pace!! How's everything going? It is has been crazy for me... but still running and haven't missed a workout!!

From Burt on Sat, Aug 21, 2010 at 14:43:58 from 68.225.214.248

Hi Kim! Glad you're settling in and getting adjusted. It must be awesome running along the ocean.

From Lysa on Sat, Aug 21, 2010 at 16:28:12 from 174.52.25.64

Burt, I always appreciate you commenting on my races. Thank you for that. And you are an amazing runner, I guess I don't have a leg to stand on when I complain about the heat do I? I can't imagine pushing through what you do in that kind of heat. Good job!

From rAtTLeTrAp on Sat, Aug 21, 2010 at 17:37:09 from 75.196.55.234

Nice time Burt! I still don't understand why you didn't kick at the finish for 4th place after leaving that girl for dead at the bridge. You were so focussed :)

From JamesH on Sat, Aug 21, 2010 at 18:42:08 from 74.211.22.194

Nice run Burt. How is it that you can have such lengthy (but entertaining) reports. I cant even get half this much from a full marathon. Good job!

From Burt on Sat, Aug 21, 2010 at 18:54:51 from 68.225.214.248

Lysa - It's ok to complain as long as you keep it in perspective. There's always someone out there that has it worse.

RT - It's very simple. I'm selfish. If I would have tried to push it hard in that heat, I could have been leaving myself for dead.

James - Did I even write about my race? Oh yeah, a little bit. LOL!

From Brent on Sat, Aug 21, 2010 at 20:58:58 from 66.7.127.219

Burt, 100 commando points, broke that 7:30 mark, sounds like a fun race where you got to race other runners and felt good, fun stuff.

Stay Kool, B of bS Rools out

From melanieb on Sat, Aug 21, 2010 at 20:59:44 from 75.169.203.224

My husband is doing the p90 day thing. They do so many pull ups. I can barely make 1. I don't think i could ever do the workouts. I do like the ab ripper. Burt great race!

From Scott Ensign on Sat, Aug 21, 2010 at 21:21:04 from 71.35.222.151

nice job Burt, way to run strong in that heat!

From Burt on Sat, Aug 21, 2010 at 22:35:07 from 68.225.214.248

Thanks Brent. Anytime you're running, it's a good time.

Melanie - Good for your husband. Start using a chair and lift yourself up with your leg. Before you know it you'll be cranking them out.

Thanks rooster.

From Lindsey Dunkley on Sun, Aug 22, 2010 at 03:42:43 from 75.169.150.178

Crazy heat for a race...good job! Sounds like your workouts are paying off!

From Burt on Sun, Aug 22, 2010 at 10:24:28 from 68.225.214.248

Thanks Lindsey. Great job on the Hobblecreek Half. You were smokin' fast!

From artichoke on Sun, Aug 22, 2010 at 22:24:26 from 97.126.184.64

Way to go in the 5K Burt! Sorry about your losing MD. I know what it's like to lose training partners, since I've lost 2 this year alone. But, alas there is life after training partners, and there's always those out there just waiting to be converted.

From artichoke on Sun, Aug 22, 2010 at 22:24:57 from 97.126.184.64

P.S.

Nice HS fotos by the way.

From Burt on Mon, Aug 23, 2010 at 00:10:10 from 68.225.214.248
