My first triathlon! It was a lot harder than I thought. First of all, I'm not a strong swimmer. At all. I estimated I could do the 400 yd swim in 9 and a half minutes. It took me 9 minutes and 9 seconds, and I almost drowned. Well, I got half way through my second lap and thought I couldn't go on. I took some time to catch my breath and I managed to finish. I estimated it would take me 48 minutes to cycle 12 miles. It took me about 44. Then I thought I could do the 5k easily enough in 26 minutes, but I was spent. It took a little over 40 minutes! I'm almost too embarrassed to post it, but I was soooo tired. And it was soooo hot. But overall it was a good experience. My wife wants me to do another one, but I think I need to practice a LOT on the swimming. I'm just glad I didn't die. Normally I don't race on Sundays, but I could've swore when I signed up that it was on Saturday. I didn't want to be out 80 bucks so I took a chance on competing without the Lord's blessing. No offense to anyone who thinks the Sabbath is on Saturday. And to those that I just offended because I mentioned God, sue me.

great job on your first triathlon! I remember my first one and also feeling like i was going to die on the swim. it's a weird feeling running right after cycling really hard. glad you enjoyed it!

Good Job Burt!!! I think it's awesome that you did the triathlon, and that your have so much support from your wife (that helps, doesn't it?). Way to go, I would have drown!

Awesome job on that Tri. I can only hope that my first attempt would be as good as yours. So have you picked another one to do yet?>?

From Burt on Thu, Jul 31, 2008 at 13:29:46

Thanks guys. Huans32, the reason why I picked this one is because the guy that organized this one also organizes one in my hometown of Kingman. I did the 5k in Kingman last year. Now I'm on the mailing list. I recently bought a road bike because of gas prices. Ever since then I've been thinking about doing a tri. When I got the email that they still had some available places, I decided on a whim to do it. So the next one I do will probably be the one in Kingman in November.

Alright, Burt! Way to go! Heck you've done more triathlons than me! I'm impressed! Your training has really progressed nicely. :) I have to admit it's nice to see some fellow bloggers riding a bit too :-P.

What type of bike do you have by the way, Burt? I ride a Dawes Lightning 1500.. it's actually a "Sprint Triathlon bike" I guess but it seems to suit me well, and it was the only one available online within my budget of $500 haha.

From Burt on Fri, Aug 01, 2008 at 12:21:07

I have a GT Series 3. It's nothing fancy, but I got a 20% discount, so it ended up costing me just under $700. It sure beats the bike I bought at Wal-Mart, which lasted 3 days.
