I got beat by 671 people and still came in the top 5%!!

Today was Pat’s Run.  This is a 4.2 mile run in honor of fallen soldier Pat Tillman.  If you don’t know, Pat cut his career short as a member of the NFL football team, the Arizona Cardinals, to fight in the war against terror.  He was killed in the line of duty by friendly fire.  Pat wore #42 when he played football at ASU and #40 as a member of the Arizona Cardinals.  The race was held at ASU, and 42 was a common theme for many aspects of the race.  That’s why the race is 4.2 miles long.  The kids’ race is 0.42 miles.  Both races finish up on the 42 yard line of the ASU football field.  They even have a special age category of 40-42.

I knew I needed to get up early to make it to the race on time.  Four of my girls ran the 0.42 mile race, so I made sure they had everything out the night before.  I was still worried that our wake up time of 5am wouldn’t be early enough.  But any earlier would just be ludicrous.  So I got up, got dressed, had 3 fig newtons and some Cytomax for breakfast, got the girls ready (I’m sure my wife did most of that), and got out the door by 6am.  It’s a good 35 to 40 minute drive to the stadium.  I figured I could take the 60 to the 101 to the 202 and get off at Rural.  Good idea, but about a half mile before the exit, traffic was at a halt.  If you’ve done the math, you know that there were a lot of people in this race.  I thought about jumping out of the car as soon as I got on the off-ramp and running the rest of the way to the race.  Might be a good warm up.  But traffic picked up some when we got there.  Still it was slow, so with about a half mile to go, I jumped out on Rural Road and ran to the start with 10 minutes to spare.

I lined up in the 7 to 8 minute mile pace corral.  They started us out in waves.  My goal time was 30:30.  Secretly my goal was to beat my boss and his wife, Jared and Michelle.  They have been a big inspiration for me to start running again.  (I beat them, but I’m not bragging.)  Read my 2009 Del Sol Ragnar report for more on them.

1 mile – 7:10 – I spent the most part of this mile doing the bob and weave.  I was actually surprised that this was my fastest mile, but there were times when I looked at my Garmin and saw I was running sub 7.

2 mile – 7:18 – This must’ve been the hill James W told me about.  I pushed it because he said it would be the same amount of downhill.

3 mile – 7:16 – I can’t think of anything interesting about this mile.

4 mile – 7:25 – Another boring mile, but almost done.

0.2 miles – 1:28 (7:20 pace) – I didn’t have much of a kick.  Next year I‘ll know that as soon as I get inside, it’s a mere 42 yards to the finish.

So, 672nd out of 13,360.  I’ll take that.  The old man from Kingman that I want to beat so bad next month in the 10k beat me again.  He better watch out. His days are numbered.   After the race we grabbed some free ice cream popsicles from Blue Bell.  I snagged one and kept walking.  After a while I wondered what was taking my girls so long to get theirs.  I went back just in time to see my wife dumping PowerAde onto my 6 year old’s mouth to unfreeze the popsicle that had frozen to her lips.

Next my girls ran.  I only signed up the three oldest, but my four year old wanted to do it, too.  So my wife went with her and they ran it bandit. There were so many kids that I didn’t see them finish, but my wife said that our 4 year old left her in the dust.  She was just praying that no one would take her and that she would be able to find her at the finish line.  All is well.  Pretty fun day!

Sounds like you had a great day and an excellent race! Sorry about the old dude. I know exactly how that feels...you'll get him next time.

From Marion on Sat, Apr 18, 2009 at 20:47:14 from 71.213.110.178

What a GREAT race :) How fun! You are such a great family :) Was the race to benefit his family or just a memorial?

From Kelli on Sat, Apr 18, 2009 at 23:20:45 from 71.219.84.84

I did not know you were running a race today! WOW, that is quite a turnout. Very cool. And AWESOME work---we had twinner paces today. We must have been on the same brain wave...

Awesome race Burt! Way to make it to the starting line on time. Sounds like a BIG crowd.

What a fabulous day for you and your family, that's a great picture too!

Top 5%, you are getting fast. Nice to be able to take the family and have them participate somehow.

Congrats.

Wow great race, looks like it was fun to participate in, and what a great cause. Nice pace!! you are speedy. Congrats!

RT - yep. You and I have had a discussion about our old man nemeses.

Marion - The race benfits the Pat Tillman foundation which is an organization that supports future leaders.

Kelli - my pace was a whole 2 seconds per mile faster than yours. IN YOUR FACE! Who am I trying to fool? You ran more than three times the distance I did. You're the best.

April - What surprised me the most was just seeing how some people didn't seem to be in a hurry at all to get to the starting line. Some people were still taking their sweet time even after the race started.

Lucia - Thanks. Couldn't you just eat my girls up?

Eric - I like to say that I beat 12,744 people rather than saying that 658 people beat me.

Lori - I may be speedy, but you certainly kick my fanny when it comes to getting the miles in.

I remember that conversation. I also know how it feels to whoop the old guy, but I didn't want to rub it in :)

Burt, the day sounds like it was a blast. The popcicle thing is just too funny. Challenge for you, break 7 minutes a mile for this race next year, no doubt, without Gwen, you can do it. It is so Kool that you had your girls do the kids race. 2 of my 5 kids have ran a marathon, 2 have ran 5Ks and 3 out of 4 grand children have ran a kids race. How long before the 4 year old will bet dad?

Stay kOOl, Keeping it Real, B of BS Rools out

From Kelli on Sun, Apr 19, 2009 at 16:36:58 from 71.219.84.84

Funny thing, my Garmin time said 1:35:56 but my actual time was 2 seconds faster. HOWEVER, my Garmin had my average pace at 7:17 but the official results say 7:19. Hmmmm....my Garmin is whacked!!!

Guess what? Blane and Dane (the two AZ guys from Biggest Loser) came and ran the 1/2 yesterday. They came in at like 2:15 and 2:20 or something like that (I was not paying attention to the news when they said the time). Anyway, wish I had known! I would have waited by the finish line to see them. They are SO COOL! They are doing a full marathon and some kind iron man in May.

Wow! 13,000? What a stampede! You did well especially considering the mob. Nice to meet you and thanks for your comment previously.

From Burt on Mon, Apr 20, 2009 at 16:52:44 from 68.76.197.194

Brent - I'll take that challenge. I'm also going to have to bite the bullet and ask you who or what Gwen is.

Kelli - I've had the same issue with my Garmin before, too.

Steve - thanks. Nice to meet you, too.

Mikemac - I think your times are coming way down, too. Keep it up!

From Camille on Mon, Apr 20, 2009 at 20:13:31 from 71.223.66.14

Burt - way to go!!! I saw the race on the news and was glad I didn't register. I don't think I could handle that crowd, but it looks like you had no problem. I love the picture of you and your kids.

I also haven't told you, but WAY TO GO with your 1/2. That was an awesome time!!! I didn't get your text message until a week or so later and it took me a while to figure out what it was about. LOL. You did amazingly.

Nice run Burt! Sounds like a fun day.

From Burt on Wed, Apr 22, 2009 at 00:44:28 from 98.167.151.26

Camille - thanks stranger.

Michelle - You're probably recieving these email notifications now. The real Michelle that commented was my boss's wife. She's awesome.

Montelepsy - I guess I gotta do it now.

Rockness - It was fun. The girls were getting their T-shirts signed by the ASU football team and Miss Phoenix. They got their pictures taken with Sparky and Baxter. There was a play place with bouncers, basketball hoops, Phoenix Coyotes hockey shoot, D-backs baseball swings, you name it. It really is a blast and I'm surprised I haven't done it before.

From Burt on Wed, Apr 22, 2009 at 01:53:02 from 98.167.151.26

Ok. More race pictures are up on Sunday's blog.
