I had this big giant root beer float last night, and I'm still feeling the effects of it.  It took me forever to get going this morning.  I don't mean running;  I mean getting out the door.  I haven't run since last Thursday.  My legs were pretty thrashed after my 10 mile run, so I took a few days off to recover.  I didn't run yesterday because I didn't get up on time.  All this being said, I feel fully recovered (other than a mass of gooey creamy goodness in my belly), and I've been toying with near 7 minute miles on my short runs.  So this morning I wanted to get at least one sub 7 minute mile.  I decided it would be easiest to do it on my first mile.  True to form, after starting out real fast, I slowed down quite a bit.  Below are the splits:

Time: (25:12, avg. pace 7:22)

Splits:

1 mile - 6:57

2 mile - 7:31

3 mile - 7:17

0.1 mile - 45 scconds (7:33 avg.) (Total time for 5k - 22:30 - New PR!!)

0.32 mile cooldown - 2:43 (8:29 avg)

Finish time: 7:30am

Temp: 55

So I got another unofficial PR.  This time for the 5k.  I highly recommend a giant root beer float before every race.

Root beer floats are SO yoummy :) Good of you to get out today :) Hey- I just noticed, you joined the blog on my husbands 40th birthday :)

From Burt on Tue, Mar 17, 2009 at 12:15:04 from 68.76.197.194

Wow, he's old! JK! I just noticed that I've been a member of the blog longer than you, and you're way more popular than me.

From Marion on Tue, Mar 17, 2009 at 12:17:28 from 71.219.49.37

Oh, I don't know about that. I just blabber more :)

From Marion on Tue, Mar 17, 2009 at 12:20:04 from 71.219.49.37

Bloody Speedy 5k! Dang it Sir, you are a royal SUPER HERO!!! (I don't know what that means, but take it from the popular kid, it's cool ;)

From rattletrap on Tue, Mar 17, 2009 at 12:20:53 from 70.192.31.124

Way to go! That's awesome that you were able to finish that third mile faster than the second. So what brand of rootbeer do you use in your new secret weapon?

From Burt on Tue, Mar 17, 2009 at 12:47:12 from 68.76.197.194

Marion - it sure sounded cool.

Mike - Nothing's so smooth and creamy, as A&W.

From twinkies on Tue, Mar 17, 2009 at 17:31:34 from 63.241.173.64

Nice PR. I don't think I have ever had root beer floats before a race. I'll have to try it.

From James W on Tue, Mar 17, 2009 at 17:42:31 from 12.151.72.1

Whats up with you running all these PR's in training runs?! Save some of that mojo for your actual races. Are you going to do Pat's Run? Seriously, nice job. Just make sure you don't overdo it on the training runs. If you're feeling too plucky, just increase your miles (slowly, of course).

From Burt on Tue, Mar 17, 2009 at 17:57:07 from 68.76.197.194

What could be better with root beer floats than a couple of Twinkies? That's probably a good idea James. I think I am going to run Pat's Run this year. Thanks for reminding me. I also want to do the Havasu Half, and I found a duathlon up in Chino Valley.

Its a new twist on the burrito mile: The Rootbeer Float 5k

Sounds like a fun event :)

From azdesertmonsoon on Tue, Mar 17, 2009 at 18:11:43 from 204.17.31.126

the best thing about A&W is the frozen glasses.

From Kelli on Tue, Mar 17, 2009 at 18:51:12 from 71.219.76.202

AWESOME Burt. I can hardly wait until you run a real race and get MAJOR PR (you know how much faster a runner goes when being chased!!!)

I love Root Beer floats--with Diet A&W and 1/2 the fat ice cream. Semi-healthy!

From Burt on Tue, Mar 17, 2009 at 19:01:03 from 68.76.197.194

Rattletrap - I saw that from the link on Allie's blog. Crazy.

AZDM - you live pretty close to the A&W on Signal Butte and Baseline. I used to be one of their regulars.

Kelli - Ice cream in any diet soda turns it all crystally. (Is that a word?) Yuck. You so crazy.

From Kelli on Tue, Mar 17, 2009 at 19:02:02 from 71.219.76.202

I just have to show you how HEALTHY I am (do not tell anyone I ate a plate of sugar cookies after lunch!)

From Smooth on Tue, Mar 17, 2009 at 19:07:37 from 71.36.65.79

Kelli, YOU DID WHAT???

Burt, CONGRATS on another unofficial PR! Keep up the good work, you speedy pants!

From rattletrap on Tue, Mar 17, 2009 at 19:24:20 from 70.192.198.249

Crazy for sure. Once I ate 2 of those monster burritos from Taco DelMar on a bet. There's no way I could have run anywhere but the restroom after that! I think I could do the rootbeer float 5k; the only thing that worries me about that is the brainfreeze :)

From Burt on Tue, Mar 17, 2009 at 19:24:30 from 68.76.197.194

Busted!

From Kelli on Tue, Mar 17, 2009 at 19:56:22 from 71.219.76.202

I was NATURALLY kidding!! I only ate 2 and they were small, promise.

From JulieW on Wed, Mar 18, 2009 at 12:18:22 from 167.239.202.1

My husband is addicted to Coke Zero floats. He claims it gets ice cystals like a slushy, that other sodas just dont do. :)

From Burt on Wed, Mar 18, 2009 at 12:46:47 from 68.76.197.194

Okay, the Root Beer float slushes at Sonic are to die for, but generally when the soda takes away the cream and converts it to crystals, that just defeats the purpose of it.

From Kelli on Wed, Mar 18, 2009 at 13:48:10 from 71.219.76.202

That is just funny becasue I like the crystals, it is the best part! Maybe I have not had a REAL RB Float in so long that I just can not remember what they taste like when they are not diet!?!

From montelepsy on Thu, Mar 19, 2009 at 14:10:52 from 155.85.58.253

Wow! Imagine if you took time to warm up and then run it like a 5k...

...and had 2 floats instead of one.

From Steve P on Thu, Mar 19, 2009 at 15:18:24 from 66.60.122.152

Hi Burt,

Nice job on another PR! I'm sure you'll kill your PR in the next race you run. Good luck with it.

By the way, thanks for your comments on my race and all.

Did your root beer float make you forget to run the rest of the week?

I saw your garden (or the beginning of it), looks good. What can you grow in AZ in a garden?

From Burt on Thu, Mar 19, 2009 at 23:33:46 from 98.167.151.26

Kelli - I find that if I don't run every day, I make it on the Hot Discussion Board more often. People can't spread their comments out on my blog. They're forced to concentrate them in one entry. :)

As far as the garden goes, I don't know. We've never had one before. I remember as a kid for a month my great aunt would go out back east. My brothers and I would have to tend her garden. Every year we would kill it. Flowers - dead. Garden - wilted. Then she'd come back and within two weeks it would be thriving again.

From Kelli on Fri, Mar 20, 2009 at 00:16:11 from 71.219.76.202

Ah, your methods revealed!

My sister has a big garden, I know she had tomatoes while we were there but I have no clue what else she grows!!! Good luck, I do not have a garden so I am not help. I also kill everything. I barely keep my flower beds alive.

From Bonnie on Mon, Mar 23, 2009 at 23:46:50 from 71.210.116.151

Hey Burt - I have found root beer floats to be a real fitness booster for me too! Now, thanks to you, I have a hankern' for one right now!
