Yesterday I saw two prairie dogs on the way to work and four on the way home.  I decided to make a game out of counting how many I saw today.

AM Bike Ride

Distance - 17.48 miles

Time - 1:04:32

Avg. Speed - 16.2 mph

Max Speed - 20.8 mph

Temp - 89

Prairie Dogs - 37

PM Bike Ride

Distance - 17.48 miles

Time - 1:05:21

Avg. Speed - 16.0 mph

Max Speed - 23.7 mph

Temp - 109

Prairie Dogs - 3

Whenever I get to work I fill up my water bottle and freeze it.  Yesterday it was 106 when I left and there was just a tiny sliver of ice left.  Today, nothing.  Still cold though.

That's a lot of dogs!

From Burt on Fri, Jul 10, 2009 at 12:18:53 from 68.76.197.194

I know! One of these days Ellsworth Road is just gonna become a huge sink hole.

From Bonnie on Fri, Jul 10, 2009 at 12:34:18 from 75.164.107.85

Wow. We don't have any prairie dogs down here -- lots of ground squirrels but the only prairie dogs I have seen are at the desert museum. That is cool that you have so many, do they have little Buddha bellies or are the ones at the desert museum just fat? I wouldn't give up our 5-6 degrees down here for them either, despite their coolness. What are the closest mountains to you? Pinetop? You might want to head up there this weekend, youch it is going to be hot.

From RivertonPaul on Fri, Jul 10, 2009 at 13:07:28 from 67.42.27.114

Next gruesome challenge -- run over one.

From Burt on Fri, Jul 10, 2009 at 13:22:11 from 68.76.197.194

Bonnie - don't get all technical on me. I don't know the difference between a ground squirrel and a prairie dog. Hmpphh! We are going camping next weekend.

Paul - I didn't count the dead ones. Looks like someone already took you up on the gruesome challenge.

From Mike Warren on Fri, Jul 10, 2009 at 14:45:08 from 207.50.149.221

They sure make a mess out of golf courses. You should see the Cedar course, they are protected so you can't touch them. I know Burt, your not a golf fan anyway. Were still going for a round one of these days! Hey, are you running SGM this year?

From Burt on Fri, Jul 10, 2009 at 15:12:22 from 68.76.197.194

I didn't make the cut on SGM. I guess I'm not good enough. I'll be there the year after next when I don't make it again.

From Brent on Fri, Jul 10, 2009 at 16:21:19 from 76.8.201.223

Burt, Samantha Smiles, praire dog road kill for dinner? Biking shorts are still the bomb, you will having those foxes chasing you in those shorts. Burt, you are easily entertained, counting rodents? Does your avg. speed going home count stopping? Nice ride.

Stay Kool, Take a Calculator - easier to count, B of BS Rools out

From Rhett on Fri, Jul 10, 2009 at 16:55:59 from 216.67.211.71

Just don't crash while paying attention to all those prairie dogs.

From Burt on Fri, Jul 10, 2009 at 17:00:24 from 68.76.197.194

Brent - I've never seen so many. It was an infestation. Yes, my average speed takes into account all the stop lights.

Rhett - I think it made the time go by much quicker. I usually watch just a few feet out in front of me because I try to miss every little rock, piece of glass, leaf, etc.

From argentinerocket on Fri, Jul 10, 2009 at 23:13:29 from 98.204.54.245

I should do the same here in DC... but with homeless guys... ok that sounded funnier in my head and now it just sounds sad... Alright forget it...

Prarie dogs, yay!

From Burt on Sat, Jul 11, 2009 at 00:41:40 from 98.167.151.26

Try and see how many you can run over with your bike Rocket.

From rattletrap on Sat, Jul 11, 2009 at 01:16:29 from 24.19.93.139

I used to count gas stations on my bike commute. I always get such a good feeling in my wallet whenever I pedal past one.

From RAD on Sat, Jul 11, 2009 at 14:54:06 from 67.166.99.8

lol!! I read 'prairie dogs' before I read what you were doing and assumed that with your humor you were just needing to hit the bathroom REALLY quick! hahahaha...I can't stop laughing about it!

Nice ride BTW...that's too hot for me to do anything but sleep!!

From RivertonPaul on Sat, Jul 11, 2009 at 15:00:52 from 75.169.10.180

RAD, if that were the case, 37 prairie dogs would be quite the feat.

From Burt on Sat, Jul 11, 2009 at 15:29:20 from 98.167.151.26

Oh RAD. Only you would think about that. And of course Walter on my FaceBook. 37 while on a bike...that could be close to a world record. It would be like - don't hit a bump, don't hit a bump...

From Leandra on Sat, Jul 11, 2009 at 22:21:52 from 76.27.81.221

Prarie Doggin it. I know somebody already made this joke, but I thought of it before I read any comments so I'm still posting it. :)

From rattletrap on Sat, Jul 11, 2009 at 22:47:49 from 70.192.97.86

Burt's last profile pic looked kind of like he was prairie doggin' it :)

Rat Race, what a great movie :)

From ChrisM on Mon, Jul 13, 2009 at 06:37:06 from 130.88.123.4

I keep hearing the theme tune to Little House on the Prairie!

From Burt on Mon, Jul 13, 2009 at 12:27:16 from 68.76.197.194

Thanks RT. That's the look I was going for. Hey Chris. Earlier today I saw that you and Sam were the leaders on the mileage board. The British Invasion!

From ChrisM on Mon, Jul 13, 2009 at 14:34:23 from 217.42.248.247

Sam's back up on top of the board again, but I've been knocked off - booo hooo :(

From argentinerocket on Mon, Jul 13, 2009 at 15:24:16 from 74.9.147.114

Not again, not the British!!!

From argentinerocket on Tue, Jul 14, 2009 at 09:28:08 from 74.9.147.114

I guess nobody thought my joke about the British invation was funny... I thought it was funny...

From Burt on Tue, Jul 14, 2009 at 12:47:58 from 68.76.197.194

It's perfectly acceptable to besmirch another nation as long as it's in good taste and as long as they are better than you in at least something. Let's see, what is England better at than the USA? Well, they recently whooped us up in the Ultimate Fighter. But then Dan Henderson destroyed Michael Bisping in their grudge match. Am I the only blogger that enjoys Mixed Martial Arts?

From Burt on Tue, Jul 14, 2009 at 12:53:36 from 68.76.197.194

BTW - I'm 99% positive I hit a prairie dog in my truck coming home yesterday.
