What a difference a fresh set of legs make.  I think I'm starting to get sick.  The last time I got sick was when I stopped running for a couple of days.  So I wanted to make sure I got out today and sweated it all out.  My son had strep throat, and my throat is starting to get yucky.  We quarantined him to his room.  But I snagged a cheese puff out of the big bucket the other day which I'm sure he had his grimy little hands in.

Last week I was averaging around 8:45 which is what I want to average in my marathon.  I wanted to run that today because I ran 8:07's Tuesday and then my feet started to ache.  But my fresh legs didn't want to go that slow.  It makes me wonder if I should go a little faster at the beginning of my marathon while I'm fresh and then fall back into an 8:45 groove.  Or will the fast start kill me later?

It was really cloudy out this morning, but not at all cold, even with the breeze.  On-Your-Right-Bicycle-Girl passed me again this morning, but she didn't scare me.  Around mile 4.8 I started getting stomach cramps.  From the sickness?  I sprinted the last quarter mile and averaged 5:30.  Hard to believe I could actually run faster than that for a full mile.

Time - 46:25 (avg. pace 8:19)

Splits - 8:21, 8:15, 8:23, 8:28, 8:35, 4:24 for 0.58 (7:35 avg.)

Burt, on that course you may want to go a little faster than you goal pace for about the first half because it is all downhill. A little faster meaning only 10 to 15 seconds per mile. It will be tempting to go a lot faster, but trust me. You will pay for it at the end if you go out too fast. That is the only time I've ever cramped up running before, when I ran that marathon. The last 6 miles are brutally hilly. Save something for them.

Glad the fresh legs were zippy. Hope the strep doesn't try to spread we have had that at my house lately.

From allie on Fri, Nov 13, 2009 at 13:34:32 from 67.177.43.41

hope you can keep the sick bugs away. rhett is right...you can go out a bit faster because of the downhill, but if you let the pace get out of control (it's easy to get caught up in the moment) you will DEFINITELY pay at the end, especially with the uphill portions. pacing is an art on this type of course (and in every marathon for that matter). you will be glad you still have your legs when you start passing all the "penguin" runners at mile 22.

Burt, run smoooth, run smooth, run smooth - pounding the quads - avoid avoid - I would not be too concerned about pace the first half, run smooth, whatever that pace may be. Your goal is to finish, right? No question you will get a PR.

Stay Kool, smooth, B of BS Rools out

Looks like a good one

From Nan Kennard on Fri, Nov 13, 2009 at 18:44:57 from 174.51.250.151

Woah, nice sprint at the end! For your marathon I think you should just go out in 5:30 pace and see how long you can hold it.

From Eric Day on Fri, Nov 13, 2009 at 18:55:50 from 189.192.55.254

ha, good one, 5:30 pace.

Don't worry about pace, just go at what you feel comfortable, and go all the way. Maybe at the end you can sprint if you still have the energy...

From Sandy Dune-Howard on Sat, Nov 14, 2009 at 08:50:14 from 90.201.147.160

I agree with April your Zippy, but I prefer Bungle Geoffrey and George is really cute LOL

Ok enough jokes if its down hill, well run faster but dont push the pace as someone else said the quads will pay for it, save somthing for those horrid nasty sounding hills barrrhumbug to hills.

Nice sprint today too well done

So, are you running Mesquite? Jose said he thought you were.

From Burt on Sat, Nov 14, 2009 at 16:40:42 from 98.177.216.165

Jose is correcto. I'm doing the full!

From Kelli on Sat, Nov 14, 2009 at 16:46:44 from 71.219.97.167

GOOD LUCK!!!! I am excited to hear about this race. We were going to come down for fun and cheer, then they decided to make the 21st be the 1 full Saturday of tithing settlement, so now my husband will be otherwise occupied. I was sad.

From redrooster on Sat, Nov 14, 2009 at 21:42:55 from 71.219.150.58

Burt, I will look for you at the packet pickup Friday. my wife and I should arrive around 6 or 7 PM depending on weather and traffic and are staying right at the casa blanca hotel. avoid that strep, my greatest fear right now is getting sick. the swine flu would destroy 16 weeks of training pretty fast....

From Teena on Sat, Nov 14, 2009 at 22:28:50 from 174.52.45.85

What are you doing snagging cheese puffs out of the big bucket??? :)

From Burt on Sat, Nov 14, 2009 at 22:42:44 from 98.177.216.165

Rooster - We should be arriving about the same time. I'm staying with Gary Culver from the blog. When I emailed the race director the other day, he said only 140 people were signed up for the full, but that number changes every day. Should be fun!

From Merri on Mon, Nov 16, 2009 at 17:34:26 from 67.199.179.247

So did you get sick?

From Rhett on Mon, Nov 16, 2009 at 17:56:17 from 74.42.168.210

Burt, what's the taper plan for this week? How you feeling?

From Burt on Mon, Nov 16, 2009 at 19:12:49 from 12.231.112.98

Merri - a little. I'm over the sore throat now, but I've got these major intestinal cramps.

Rhett - 5.6 tomorrow. 3 the next day. Done.

From Lily on Mon, Nov 16, 2009 at 19:16:26 from 67.199.181.242

Burt's got the 'runs'. haha

From Burt on Mon, Nov 16, 2009 at 19:20:24 from 12.231.112.98

Go drink some egg nog, Lily.

From redrooster on Mon, Nov 16, 2009 at 20:34:58 from 129.123.3.31

140 people??? now I am almost sure to get lost on the race course. I sure hope they get their promised USATF certification for this thing.

From Leandra on Mon, Nov 16, 2009 at 22:53:40 from 174.52.142.13

Hey! You've gotten pretty speedy in my absence! I know you've missed me! Good running these past few weeks!

From Burt on Tue, Nov 17, 2009 at 12:04:36 from 12.231.112.98

Oh Lani, I've missed you ever so much.
