Time: 23:16 (avg. pace 7:45)

Splits: 7:43, 7:53, 7:40

At this pace, I would finish a 5k in 24:03.  My goal for Saturday's 5k (Run for Nie - see Discussion Forum) is to break 24.  I feel confident that I can.  But I've been doing some thinking.  Last week I ran a mile in 7:05.  Shouldn't it stand to reason that I could do 3.1 miles 20 seconds slower?  If I could average 7:25 per mile, I could run the 5k in 23 minutes.  Who knows what could happen in a race?  Generally though I start out too fast and wear myself out.  Then I get complacent with letting people pass me.  Once the first person passes me I think, "Well I'll just run right behind them for a bit."  Before long someone else passes me, and I think the same thing.  Finally I've fallen so far behind that I don't even have the will power at the end to try and catch anyone.  So Saturday I resolve to just run at the pace I'm comfortable with during my training.  I resolve to have the energy at the end of the race to have a kick left.  Most importantly, I resolve to have fun as always.

Burt, start at a pace say 7:40, then do the last 1.1 miles at 7:20-7:30 pace. That should give you the time you want plus the energy to do the strong finish.

Good luck on saturday's race!

From Burt on Tue, Jan 20, 2009 at 13:25:15

Gracias, amigo.

From Eric Day on Tue, Jan 20, 2009 at 18:45:49

So, are you up to the new PR?

From Burt on Tue, Jan 20, 2009 at 18:49:07

I think so. Although I heard a rumor that race was going to be cancelled. I hope not.

From Bec on Thu, Jan 22, 2009 at 10:35:47

Burt,

You seem like a funny guy. Do you know Smooth as well? She is the best, she is a complete machine. She runs so much she is one weird puppy!

From Burt on Thu, Jan 22, 2009 at 10:51:33

Bec - I have never met Smooth. I've just interacted with her on the blog. But everyone seems to love her. I look forward reading your blogs in the future.

Eric - they cancelled the 5k this weekend. Bummer. Maybe I'll just go out and run 3.1 miles on my own.

From Eric Day on Thu, Jan 22, 2009 at 13:14:43

No other 5k around where you are?

From Kelli on Thu, Jan 22, 2009 at 18:06:33

I think you will do great on your race. You always run faster in a race than training, so you might surprise yourself! GOOD LUCK!

From Burt on Thu, Jan 22, 2009 at 18:54:48

Eric - I'm already out $25 for this race. I'm not complaining though, because it went to a good cause. I'll just wait 'til next week when I have the 10k. They're definetely not going to cancel that one.

From Kelli on Thu, Jan 22, 2009 at 18:56:10

So, it got canceled then?? MAN, I miss everything. I need to go back to school and learn how to read.

From Eric Day on Thu, Jan 22, 2009 at 18:59:09

Well, 10k it is then! Good luck

From Burt on Thu, Jan 22, 2009 at 19:06:14

Kelli - I figured you missed it again, but this time I wasn't going to say anything. :)

From Kelli on Thu, Jan 22, 2009 at 19:19:16

Just cart me off to some looney bin or something. I am losing it.

From Eric Day on Thu, Jan 22, 2009 at 19:26:11

Reading Burt & Kelli's comments always make my day.

Is this a permanent 'state of the mind' or is it because its winter and you guys go a little bit cuckoo of being closed up?

From Kelli on Thu, Jan 22, 2009 at 19:27:30

I can not speak for Burt, but I believe it is permanent for me. Must be all of the inversion polluting my brain!

From Kelli on Thu, Jan 22, 2009 at 19:27:54

Oh, and glad to make your day, Eric!!! I live to serve.

From Eric Day on Thu, Jan 22, 2009 at 19:32:52

See what I mean?

I'm laughing my guts here by myself (people must think I lost one of my marbles!!).

From Kelli on Thu, Jan 22, 2009 at 19:43:29

Glad to see that I am not alone on the marble losing.

From Eric Day on Thu, Jan 22, 2009 at 19:52:46

You are not alone.

=)

From kungfublonde on Thu, Jan 22, 2009 at 21:53:04

Remember for Saturday: Speedy arms!

And have fun :)

From Kelli on Thu, Jan 22, 2009 at 22:56:27

Apparently I am NOT alone (and it is not just the voices in my head this time!)

From Eric Day on Fri, Jan 23, 2009 at 10:27:28

Kelli, yup, I agree. It's not the loose marbles this time !

From Burt on Fri, Jan 23, 2009 at 10:54:23

LOL! Benefit of the doubt: When I see that someone has entered a lengthy entry and then they have a ton of comments, I don't even bothering commenting because I'm afraid I'll repeat something someone else said, and I don't want to read through all the comments. I'm sure I'm not the only one...

From Smooth on Fri, Jan 23, 2009 at 11:02:07

Burt,

What'd you say? Is this thread about someone loosing marbles? OK, I'm just gonna comment on those awesome sub-8 splits of yours. I'm drooling over that. I can only dream of running that kinda 5K splits. Have a great weekend.

From Burt on Fri, Jan 23, 2009 at 11:05:25

No, Smooth. It's about how everyone loves you. And what are you talking about? You're way faster than I am.

From Eric Day on Fri, Jan 23, 2009 at 11:28:33

Marbles, splits, love, speedy arms; this blog has it all!!

Priceless ...

From kungfublonde on Fri, Jan 23, 2009 at 11:46:41

when I'm in a hurry, I just read the post and not the comments. So I'm sure my posts reflect that, and everyone thinks I'm kungfudumbblonde.

I came back to wish Burt good luck on his race tomorrow and caught up with the comment conversation.

ooops :)

So if you go running tomorrow Burt, have a good run. Practice those speedy arms!

From Kelli on Fri, Jan 23, 2009 at 12:11:08

Rachel---we are both guilty!!! I am even guilty of not getting an entire post (check Camille's from Tuesday, I neglected to notice she was laid off and told her "GREAT JOB!") Sometimes us mom's are just in a hurry, but we are nice enough to take time out to comment anyway!!!

I am losing my marbles and listening to the voices in my head.

From Eric Day on Fri, Jan 23, 2009 at 12:17:43

I imagine Burt just sitting back in his chair laughing at us since he is not posting here, but it is HIS blog.

Something to say for yourself Burt?

Are you just going to let us crazy people go on rambling on forever?

From Kelli on Fri, Jan 23, 2009 at 12:18:45

I am sure he likes to ignore the craziness. Maybe we can make him a hot topic about NOTHING!

From Eric Day on Fri, Jan 23, 2009 at 12:22:50

It's sure headed that way!

From kungfublonde on Fri, Jan 23, 2009 at 12:22:57

Those kinds of hot topics are my specialty!

And I think Burt likes it when we ramble nonsensically on his blog. It makes him feel EXTRA smart! I have a knack for making people feel smarter around me, that's the *real* reason I have so many friends...

From Kelli on Fri, Jan 23, 2009 at 12:26:03

Rachel, I just like you because you are cute as a bug in a rug! And positive and uplifting ALWAYS, no matter what!

It is time we get Burt to comment and quit working, or whatever he is doing!

From Burt on Fri, Jan 23, 2009 at 13:17:08

Son of a gun, you guys! You got me on the Hot Discussion Board. Now I have to worry about everyone reading my nonsensical blog for the next week or so. Maybe I can ramp up the comments on someone else's blog so I get moved down. Geez. Go away for a couple of hours and look what happens!

From Kelli on Fri, Jan 23, 2009 at 16:04:04

I went away, but I am back.

From Kelli on Fri, Jan 23, 2009 at 17:48:06

Unless someone keeps making comments on your blog.

From ANONYMOUS on Fri, Jan 23, 2009 at 17:48:33

But why would anyone do that????

From Kelli on Fri, Jan 23, 2009 at 17:48:48

I have mo idea why anyone would do that...

From Kelli on Fri, Jan 23, 2009 at 17:49:06

...but I think I will just to drive Burt NUTS!!!!!!!

From Kelli on Fri, Jan 23, 2009 at 17:51:35

Oh, hey, did I tell you that your average pace was awesome??? Were you being chased by a rabid dog, or are you just that fast???

From Kelli on Fri, Jan 23, 2009 at 17:52:23

Oh, and did I also tell you that we have switched our legs for Del Sol since you updated me on the difficulty levels. I wanted to keep 12, but a better runner bumped me off! So, now I will be runner number 7.

From Kelli on Fri, Jan 23, 2009 at 17:53:05

I can keep going if you want and you will be to the very top of the Hot Discussion Board! Shall I?

From Smooth on Fri, Jan 23, 2009 at 17:59:49

LOL!!! Kelli, what'd you say? Switching legs? You better keep yours, Burt's legs might be too hairy. I've never seen them, but I think they (Burt's legs) are not very womanly.

From Kelli on Fri, Jan 23, 2009 at 18:01:39

Smooth, I am sure Burt has perfectly sexy legs!!!

From Burt on Fri, Jan 23, 2009 at 18:04:12

Okay, okay. I set myself up for that one. And I'll post a picture of my legs soon.

From Eric Day on Fri, Jan 23, 2009 at 18:10:29

Third in hot list...mmm...not bad Burt... since you didn't cooperate.

From Kelli on Fri, Jan 23, 2009 at 18:11:10

Yes, Burt, you did!! But, I now have to go do my hair for my date (and defrost my hands from being in the basement for too long), so you can go jack up everyone elses discussions and get yourself off of the hot list! I will be gone from the blog until tomorrow!!

From Burt on Fri, Jan 23, 2009 at 18:11:37

Hairy is sexy, by the way. Or didn't you know that? Poor Bec is new to the blog, and now she's getting all these comments sent to her inbox. Sorry, Bec!!

From Kelli on Fri, Jan 23, 2009 at 18:13:10

Hairy is NOT sexy on a female!!!!!

Just had to add that. And sorry Becca, Burt is out of control!!!

From Burt on Fri, Jan 23, 2009 at 21:35:47

Okay, picture's up on Thursday's blog.
