Since I think Montelepsy is so cool and I want to be just like him, I tried to do intervals for the first time to day.  I suck.  My intent was to do one mile all out, jog for half a mile, run another mile, jog half a mile, and run another mile.  My first mile was pretty good, but I wore myself out.  I jogged the next half mile and tried to get going for the second mile, but I'm not man enough.  I stopped after a half mile and rested for about 5 to 10 minutes.  Then I ran the last one.  Below are the splits:

1 mile - 6:35 (this has to be a post HS PR.)

2 mile - 8:05

3 mile - 7:17

I don't even know if "intervals" is the correct terminology for what I attempted to do.  On a side note, my boy's running has gotten a lot better these last two days.  The day before yesterday he did an 8:20 mile and yesterday an 8:09.

In my experience, the best way to do this workout is to try to hit somewhere around 5k or 10k race pace for each mile, then take a quarter mile recovery jog. It may seem somewhat easy the first mile, but you'll definitely be feeling it by the third...

Hey, but you tried...1 point for effort.

Burt, I need the manual on how to post pictures on the blog. Can you teach me?

From joelle on Fri, Apr 24, 2009 at 12:41:13 from 74.211.93.43

Thanks for the comment on my running. Your blog is fun. I will check to see how your son's triathalon goes! Good luck!

From sam on Fri, Apr 24, 2009 at 14:11:08 from 90.212.41.43

great news on your son doing a tri...

Love the new piccy, coooooollll........

Hey mile reps are hard going, real hard, maybe try doing half mile reps at 10k pace with shorter recoveries just to get used to the feeling of doing reps..... as long as the reps are over 2 mins you will get a benefit from them.

I only do 3 reps to start with as well and you have to have the right frame of mind before you do them, gotta suck it and see how you feel too

;-)

Hey Burt -- good job on the speed work.

Today is much better (temp-wise) than the rest of this week, how I am I ever going to survive 4 months of this? WOW - do we "acclimate?" or just not go outside during the day?

From Burt on Fri, Apr 24, 2009 at 16:26:21 from 68.76.197.194

Nevels - That's good advice. I just wanted my times to be as good as Montelepsy's. What is the correct terminology - intervals? repeats? fartleks?

Eric - one lousy point? I'll send you instructions on how to post pictures.

Does everyone know the song, "nanananana-na-na I'm gonna start a fight. So what - something rock star- something something"? I don't know it all or really who sings it. Pink? Anyway, if you go to Joelle's blog tell me if that song doesn't instantly pop into your head. I don't know why. LOL. I guess she's a rock star.

Sam - that wouldn't work for me. My half mile reps are 1:40, so...

Bonnie - I'm not going to lie to you. You're going to melt.

From sam on Fri, Apr 24, 2009 at 17:24:19 from 90.201.147.108

half mile rep in 1.40 so you do a mile rep in just over 3 mins, I dont think so !

Mine are 3mins when marathon training and

5k 10k training my half mile reps are 2mins 30

Song is by Pink, shes totaly well you know, love that song, :))

A little conversation on Marion's blog with Rattletrap. You had to be there.

I think you're cool too, Burt. Ice cold, in fact. And fleet of foot. You might even be faster if your running form didn't consist of looking down, flexing your biceps and flashing gang signs.

From Burt on Sat, Apr 25, 2009 at 12:29:36 from 98.167.151.26

I was so busy posing that I forgot to stop my Garmin.

From Vickie on Sun, Apr 26, 2009 at 16:46:43 from 98.167.151.26

Maybe that's why the battery died.......

From Lucia on Mon, Apr 27, 2009 at 09:00:26 from 74.9.147.114

Thanks for making me laugh out loud on a Monday morning. Too funny!

Burt, how about starting with shorter intervals, like going 1/4 of a mile fast, 1/2 mile jog, etc, then building up to longer intervals?

Oh, and your boy rocks!
