I only planned on running three this morning because I did 12 yesterday.  After two steps I was like, "Ow.  This hurts."  I wasn't sure I would even be able to do three.  After two miles I had to stop and stretch out because my lower back was hurting so bad.  Then after another half mile I had to stop again.  I wonder if it's because of the lumbar support my wife bought me for my truck.  Maybe I had it too low.

Pace - 8:40

what's the definition of irony...

From Eric Day on Thu, Aug 20, 2009 at 12:20:34 from 200.77.42.126

gee Burt, take care. I find that lowering my hands a while while running eases the back tension a little.

From Merri on Thu, Aug 20, 2009 at 12:21:40 from 67.199.179.247

hmm maybe the the lumbar thing just takes time.

From Burt on Thu, Aug 20, 2009 at 12:33:57 from 68.76.197.194

Nevels - According to Garland Greene its, "A bunch of idiots dancing in a plane to a song made famous by a band that died in a plane crash." Sweet Home Alabama...!

Eric - gracias por el consejo.

Merri - I raised it up this morning. Hopefully it helps. At the least it's providing air flow to my sweaty back. Honestly, I don't know if I sweat more in my truck or on my bike.

From Nevels on Thu, Aug 20, 2009 at 13:41:54 from 131.204.15.93

So clearly you need Nicholas Cage to outwit your lumbar support so he can get home to see his daughter.

Don't you mean Cameron Po? "Put the bunnay in the box."

From seeaprilrun on Thu, Aug 20, 2009 at 14:30:26 from 205.172.12.229

Uh oh. Do you usually experience back pain when you run? I was having lower back pain for a while on runs but it went away almost instantly when I started doing a little bit of ab strengthening.

From auntieem on Thu, Aug 20, 2009 at 15:17:16 from 67.182.145.8

Sorry! Bummer to have ANY pain. Lots of stretching and ice might help. I love ice.

From Burt on Thu, Aug 20, 2009 at 15:19:04 from 68.76.197.194

April - that's a good idea. I'll do some sit-ups tonight.

Em - I have been stretching it and it feels better.

From Nan Kennard on Thu, Aug 20, 2009 at 15:43:01 from 174.51.250.151

I had to stop to stretch twice this morning too. Your not alone! Yoga/Pilates does wonders for me.

From Burt on Thu, Aug 20, 2009 at 15:48:34 from 68.76.197.194

Nan - only gay men do either of those two things, and rest assured, I am 100% straight as you can tell by the way I just pronounce either.

From Nan Kennard on Thu, Aug 20, 2009 at 15:53:47 from 174.51.250.151

Oh, is that why I can't get my husband to do yoga with me either? You men are too cool for some healthy back stretching eh? You'd rather pay some professional hundreds of dollars to pop your back into place or massage those manly muscles? That is much more macho. Or do only gays get massage too? I'll have you know there is a very nice, older, presumably straight man in my pilates reformer class. And he looks very aligned and pain free.

From Merri on Thu, Aug 20, 2009 at 16:12:16 from 67.199.179.247

maybe you're pregnant. i've heard of pregnant women getting back pain before.

From sam Dean-Howard on Thu, Aug 20, 2009 at 18:05:26 from 90.201.147.164

LOL Pregnant sorry, but thats funny :-) I see guys doing pilates and yoga all the time when I am on the xtrainer and alls they do is watch the women LOL< so go do some yoga Burt, they have older women too :-O

From Brent on Fri, Aug 21, 2009 at 09:49:05 from 66.7.127.219

Burt, I thought yoga was only for girl watching or sissies, then I tried a class, darn hard and no time for girl watching. Now, what would Bart Simpson do? As Bart is the guiding light, yell at Marge! It must be her fault for the back.

If you were a real simpson you would gain, not lose, don't change that letter.

when I did the RHPC half it killed my lower back. I think I just wasn't ready to do that kind of mileage, I went from doing 5 and 6 mile runs to a 13 mile run. and also my abs aren't as strong as they should be I think that helps a lot. I took it easy for a week and it felt better. It still bothers me toward the end of my long runs.

From Merri on Fri, Aug 21, 2009 at 12:20:27 from 67.199.179.247

Leandra go to a tae bo class it works your core the whole time w/ out even knowing it. :)

From seeaprilrun on Fri, Aug 21, 2009 at 17:01:17 from 68.103.250.39

How is your back today Burt?

From Burt on Fri, Aug 21, 2009 at 17:17:32 from 68.76.197.194

It feels better. I didn't run today though because my tendons in my ankles feel sore. So I'll try to get a 10-miler in tomorrow.

From Eric Day on Fri, Aug 21, 2009 at 17:25:06 from 189.192.209.188

If tendons are sore, take it easy don't push the pace. Telling you by experience.
