I don't think anyone poisoned the prairie dogs, nor did the snake eat them.  I did not count them though because I had infiltration rates and orifice equations swimming through my head.

I'm afraid to ask...

From auntieem on Tue, Aug 11, 2009 at 12:11:34 from 67.182.145.8

You are so lucky to have prairie dogs. I looked and looked for some on my bike ride Sunday, but didn't see a single one. Saw one black bear, but it looked very slow, even slower than me. I flashed the peace sign, just in case.

Maybe I don't even know what a prairie dog looks like.

From ChrisM on Tue, Aug 11, 2009 at 12:21:44 from 86.148.154.163

Oriface equations? LOL

From Burt on Tue, Aug 11, 2009 at 12:22:14 from 68.76.197.194

Sno - Nothing to worry about. I was just wearing my engineering hat this morning. Or should I say 'my pocket protector'? Maybe you should be worried.

Em - You are so cool. I thought about taking a picture of one today. I'll have to do it next time. Truth be known, I don't know if they are prairie dogs or ground squirrels or what. I think they're prairie dogs.

From Burt on Tue, Aug 11, 2009 at 12:26:27 from 68.76.197.194

Yes Chris. Well no, orifice equation. I don't know what an oriface equation is, and I'm not going to the Urban Dictionary to find out.

Q=CdA(2gh)^1/2

where Q = flow in m/s

Cd = coefficient of discharge

A = area of opening in square meters

g = acceleration due to gravity

h = hydraulic head

From Bonnie on Tue, Aug 11, 2009 at 12:28:20 from 75.164.103.101

Auntie is cool indeed. They are most likely ground squirrels, sorry Burt. This is what happens when I go to the Desert Museum so frequently, I know the difference between the two ;-).

I will need to look up an oriface equation, it sounds like something I might have to see if I can put on a homework this fall!

From auntieem on Tue, Aug 11, 2009 at 12:31:56 from 67.182.145.8

I looked some pictures on the internet so I'll know if I encounter one. Doesn't look like anything I've ever seen before. In the vermin department, they must be the equivalent of our geese! Which are everywhere, and deserve to be run over by cyclists, in my opinion.

From Burt on Tue, Aug 11, 2009 at 12:37:06 from 68.76.197.194

ORIFICE!! Darn you Chris! LOL!

From Mike Warren on Tue, Aug 11, 2009 at 12:41:02 from 207.50.149.221

Nice workout! With all the thinking you do, the time must really fly. Never a dull moment with Burt around!

From seeaprilrun on Tue, Aug 11, 2009 at 12:43:05 from 68.102.148.130

orifice equation okay it's all explained now but I got a weird mental image when I read that

From Snoqualmie on Tue, Aug 11, 2009 at 13:21:20 from 24.18.192.33

We got to see tons of prairie dogs (and the rare albino prairie dog town) when we went to South Dakota for the Deadwood Marathon a couple of years ago. That's a great destination race if anyone is looking for such a trip. Black Hills - fantastic country.

From Nevels on Tue, Aug 11, 2009 at 14:46:36 from 131.204.15.93

equations...i'm against 'em...

From JD on Tue, Aug 11, 2009 at 14:54:02 from 64.65.159.206

Out here in the Wild West, orifice equations are a dime a dozen. You just need to know where to look for 'em.

From Nevels on Tue, Aug 11, 2009 at 14:56:28 from 131.204.15.93

Yeah, it seems that around here, I see people pulling equations out of orifices all the time...

From Bonnie on Tue, Aug 11, 2009 at 15:00:54 from 128.196.228.134

ok -- Nevels and JD (and Burt) you guys owe me a keyboard - I just sprayed herbal tea out of my nose and on to mine.

.. that is why they call it the Wild West JD - you can't swing a dead cat without hitting an orifice equation.

From Burt on Tue, Aug 11, 2009 at 16:22:06 from 68.76.197.194

Why is that when a keyboard goes up in flames, Nevels is always in the mix? Anyway, I think I need to be using Darcy's equation.

From Leandra on Tue, Aug 11, 2009 at 17:02:30 from 207.224.207.18

Orifice Equations are what I think about in my spare time too.... wait, no I don't.

From Eric Day on Tue, Aug 11, 2009 at 17:20:30 from 189.192.59.250

Did I miss something....?

Just because you lent us Obama for a couple of days doesn't mean you can all go crazy. By the way, we did send him back...

From Rhett on Tue, Aug 11, 2009 at 18:54:54 from 74.32.218.69

Glad your still out there looking for prarie dogs. I recieved your message about Ragnar. I don't think I'm a relay kind of guy, but I'll be cheering for you and your team.

From Kelli on Tue, Aug 11, 2009 at 20:20:26 from 71.219.82.15

Nice job on the 12 yesterday and the bike ride today! How was the temp for the biking? The heat has returned here, darn it.

Have a good week BURT.

From Merri on Tue, Aug 11, 2009 at 20:53:37 from 160.7.234.108

I like the name nevels. isn't there a nevels in harry potter?

From Merri on Tue, Aug 11, 2009 at 20:59:43 from 160.7.234.108

speaking of swimming last year we were swimming with cryptosporidium

From Brent on Tue, Aug 11, 2009 at 22:29:06 from 66.7.127.219

Burt, praire dog + run + food - calories = biggest loser squared? Did you have pie 22/7 for breakfast?

Stay Kool, out of round, B of BS Rools out

Dreaming equations while biking = crash and burn

From Nevels on Tue, Aug 11, 2009 at 22:36:28 from 131.204.15.93

Thanks, Merri.

From Burt on Tue, Aug 11, 2009 at 22:44:25 from 98.167.151.26

Leandra - you're jealous of my equations.

Eric - you shoulda kept him. I think he was born in Mexico anyway. Well some country other than USA.

Rhett - Thanks anyway. Now I've had two yesses and two nos. Glad you're getting a few miles in lately.

Kelli - It was 100 on the way home, but it was overcast. I think the heat is back with a vengeance. And I will have a good week. Thank you.

Merri - Neville Longbottom. And sorry about the cryptosporidium. My bad. I hope you don't have AIDS.

Brent - I believe both of your equations can be solved for mathematically and scientifically.

From James W on Wed, Aug 12, 2009 at 12:38:37 from 12.151.72.1

Too funny! Burt, if I am healed up and back to form, count me in as a possible yes. Gotta check with the boss as well to see if she would be okay with it.

From Burt on Thu, Aug 13, 2009 at 13:51:24 from 68.76.197.194

Right on James. I'll look forward to having you back. The bad thing is, I haven't got a lot of affirmative responses yet. What would you think about doing an ultra? Overall distances would range from 31 to 36 miles. If we put an ultra team together, I bet I can get my mother-in-law to cove half the cost.

From Kelli on Thu, Aug 13, 2009 at 14:03:01 from 71.219.64.200

YES----do an Ultra then we can race!!!

From Merri on Thu, Aug 13, 2009 at 14:53:58 from 160.7.234.108

i see how it is burt, no one invited me to be on their relay team. hmpff :)

From James W on Thu, Aug 13, 2009 at 14:59:35 from 12.151.72.1

Yeah, just call us "Ultra-NUTS". I'll let you know. Covering half the cost would certainly be helpful.

From Burt on Thu, Aug 13, 2009 at 15:05:26 from 68.76.197.194

Oh, Merri. I figured you were just too cool for us. Of course you're invited. You can do two extra legs if you want.
