I did a 0.81 mile warmup with Mary.  She took it nice and slow until the kick at the end.  She's got a pretty good kick.  I was having to push it to keep up with her.

Then I decided to run a mile as fast as I could based off a conversation I had with Sasha on his blog yesterday.  I ran it in 7:05.  I was hoping I would be at least in the sixes.  Oh well.  I just haven't trained to maintain that level of speed for so long.  I started out at a strong gait, but it didn't last long.  Some people tell me that I need to do speed work in order to take it to the next level.  Sasha says to work on your base miles.  I've been averaging less than 20 miles a week, so I can't testify either way.

Good run Burt!

So Burt, if you want to run a marathon in good time, I agree with Sasha. Build up some good daily mileage and then add some speed. If you try to do both, you'll end up hurt. If your are going for shorter distance then of coarse you can add speed in.

I have a 5k next weekend, but I'm focusing more on the 10k the following weekend. How do you recommend I train for the next 2 weeks?

From Michelle N. on Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 12:28:09

I would try and add a little mileage each day. Like maybe 1/4-1/2 mile per day. The endurance is more important than any speed at this point.

Remember to take it easy before the race (rest or taper).

For the 10K would suggest at least 3 miles per day at a nice pace. If you can do it 6 days a week, go for it.

7:05 is great!

I think people are going to tell you all sorts of things... books are going to tell you to train differently, and olympic athletes use different training methods too - you have to try and see what works for you...

Last year I was doing a lot of miles and I got injured - you could say I went too much too soon, but I don't think so, I think my body does better with less miles but more quality miles (intervals and speedwork) and more cross-training. What-evah, I'm no expert... Peace out!
