Have you ever seen that movie The Rookie?  It's the one with Dennis Quaid who is coaching a high school baseball team and realizes he can still throw the ball real hard, so he joins the majors.  Well, in one scene, if memory serves, he stops along side the road where there is a police radar that shows what speed you're driving.  Then he throws some baseballs in the direction of the radar and they get clocked at and around 100 mph.  Not knowing how those things work, I wondered whether or not they could actually pick up the speed of a tiny ball if they're designed to measure the speed of a much larger vehicle in comparison.  I even wondered if they could capture the speed of a person running.  So I decided to test the theory out about the runner this morning because there was one set up half a mile away from my house.  I got out in the bike lane and nothing.  Then I moved over into the street, and it registered me at 7 mph.  I'm probably the only one who thinks that's cool.

There's a couple I often see walking their dogs when I'm running.  I haven't named them yet because the only thing I can come up with is Poor-Lady-With-Big-Dog and Fat-Slob-With-Tiny-Dog.  But that just seems too long.  I think I've trained them well because Poor-Lady-With-Big-Dog said good morning at the same time I did.

Last week I only ran 14 miles.  I convinced myself that it was okay because I need to rest some after the marathon.  The problem is, it was my birthday week, and I've been eating a lot of junk food.  So when I jumped on the scale this morning I was at 205.  But after I ran I was at 199.  Not too bad, I guess.

Time - 47:38 (8:30 avg.)

Splits - 8:26, 8:24, 8:22, 8:31, 8:48, 5:07 for 0.61 (8:24 avg.)

i think it is cool. in fact, i have done that myself, but it wouldn't work. i think i went back and forth like 5 times trying to get it to recognize i was there. arizona police radars must be more high-tech.

i think the new nicknames should be big lady and tiny man. or poor dog and slob dog.

From Twinkies on Mon, Dec 07, 2009 at 12:42:30 from 134.24.147.249

I don't think a speed detector would work with a baseball. But they do work on runners, sometimes anyways. Radars detect movement, so if it is not picking you up, wave your arms wildly.

From rattletrap on Mon, Dec 07, 2009 at 12:52:31 from 70.193.229.95

I can picture Burt running down the middle of the road flailing his arms like Phoebe :)

From Burt on Mon, Dec 07, 2009 at 12:52:55 from 12.231.112.98

allie - That's because you are totally cool. It must not of worked for you because you're so tiny (or fast). I like the nicknames because who knows if they follow my blog. Maybe they won't realize I'm talking about them.

Twinkies - I can picture you doing that in your yellow twinkies shirt.

RT - how about like Olive Oyl?

From Rossy on Mon, Dec 07, 2009 at 12:59:28 from 151.151.7.51

I also think it's cool; however, it's kind of disappointing when the radar does not pick you up; that is, last Saturday, I was running at a pretty good pace in the middle of the right-lane of a non-busy road and the radar registered nothing (however, I was not wildly waving my arm). Also, I completely forgot about this classic scene in the movie The Rookie (there is also an Office episode that has an intro vignette about running by radar signs). Run on!

From Burt on Mon, Dec 07, 2009 at 13:03:25 from 12.231.112.98

I remember not having it register as I rode my bike by one once, but I can't remember if I was in the drive lane or the bike lane. I'll have to watch that episode of The Office again.

We call them Speed Wagons in Alabama, and if it is parked in my neighborhood, I always give it a run by, Fun.

From Lily on Mon, Dec 07, 2009 at 14:43:18 from 67.199.181.242

How about just get a Garmin? That will tell you your speed :) Santa WILL bring me one for Christmas!

BTW- Weighing after a workout just ain't accurate by any account Burty. I'm sure you know this right? Have a super day. It is dumping snow here as I type

From TBarlow on Mon, Dec 07, 2009 at 15:03:41 from 216.194.124.36

I bet you were catching speed in front of the radar because of "flat slob" - I'm sure he's speedy too :) How nice to run outside, we have 6 inches of snow here in UT

Nice run Burt! Time to get back in training mode. Recovery time is over =P

From Burt on Mon, Dec 07, 2009 at 16:50:33 from 12.231.112.98

Jelmo - for all I know they could be called the same thing here. However, Alabama does have funny names for everything.

Lily - Santa gave me the last one the elves had in stock last year, and now he's discontinued them. Sorry.

Toby - There has been a light rain for most of the day here. So we got that going for us.

Vinh - Sir, yes sir!

From Brent on Mon, Dec 07, 2009 at 22:19:25 from 76.8.201.223

Burt - hum - we are only a few days from joining the fat slob with big dog club - maybe we need a lose weight contest, anti fat slob with small dog count down. I have gained 10 lbs since STG.

Rookie was good, remember the titans, best sports movie.

Some runners we have named: neandethal man (guy always runs with his shirt off, real hairy back) skyman (always looking up) big bounce (lady with something bouncing out of control)

Stay Kool, B of BS Rools out

From seeaprilrun on Mon, Dec 07, 2009 at 22:25:08 from 205.172.12.229

All this just makes me want to run by a radar. You DO sweat a lot--a pound a mile or so? My difference in weight before and after a 10 mile run is 1 pound--2 pounds if it is very hot. It was good to take some time off after the marathon and let yourself rest! 'Tis the season for junk food--so hard to stay away from it, especially FUDGE! I wish I saw other people running out in the boonies so I could give them nicknames:)

From Burt on Mon, Dec 07, 2009 at 23:34:49 from 98.177.216.165

Brent - I still like Hoosiers. Nostalgia may have a lot to do with it. Love the nicknames. That was a good chuckle.

April - Did I tell you what my theory was? I think after the trauma of running a marathon, my body wants to retain all the food I put in it because it's afraid I'll burn it all off again. That's partially why I'm gaining. Fudge is the other factor.

ha ha ha a cyclist in england has been done for speeding going over 30mph on his bicycle :-O

I think its really really cool, only one by us is on a very busy road with no bike lane and I have thought on the odd occasion to run in front of it but its a really dangerous road so I havent LOL 7mph well done BURT :-)
